    Progression to solo diving

OK, so I have reached the point where looking at solo diving is right for me. I spoke with a local TDI instructor and have arranged for a a solo cert in the spring (too darn cold right now for sure). So, it is my intention to head to the pool during the rest of the winter and practice some...

    2009 SB Fitness Exercise Challenge!!!

I'm in. No excuses this year. But, it may be a bit later in the day before I start on January 1. Right now I am celebrating the Canadian Junior Hockey win over the dreaded rivals USA. Damn, did I just commit to exercise tomorrow?

How would you teach a 10yr old to use dive tables?

Take it from someone who has been there and done that (not SCUBA, but certainly a direct parallel). My kids are now 25 and 23. I wish I had backed off a bit when I was in a position similar to the OP. If you are paying somone to teach your kids, let them teach your kids. Stand back; take a...

    Why Nikon?

I spent some time reading about both the Nikon and Canon DSLR before heading to my local photo shop with credit card in hand. I was a bit biased because I had a Nikon SLR a long time ago, but sold it because I found that I was not using it. I am not savy enough to know which lenses are better...

    Topside Lens choice

AF-S Micro-NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED. This one is my preferred lens. I use it for portraits and instead of a "normal" fixed focal length lens. Fabulous bokeh. I use this lens underwater with a flat port and have used the Ikelite zoom ring from another port for manual focus. Works very well...

How did Santa treat you for Christmas?

Both our kids are home. My wife and daughter are off to Vegas for a few days tomorrow. My son and I have tickets to the World Junior Hockey Championships (quarter final and semi final). I got socks for Christmas. Life is good.

St. Lawrence Water Temps in August?

The best place I have found for this information is the NOAA National Data Buoy Center. Try this link for the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence. Select one of the data buoy sites and when the page comes up you can get historical data for the last year or more.

    Adventures in carry-on baggage

Sorry, I have been away a few days. The backpack is a Lowepro CompuTrekker Plus AW. I pack my camera with the macro lens in the housing. No o-rings, or a spare o-ring on the housing and port. This is at the bottom of the bag. The dome port fits in a compartment at the top. The two lenses...

Last minute christmas bonaire vacation airfare

Spirit airlines is, to me, the discount of all discount airlines. I flew with them Ft. Lauderdale to San Pedro Sula and return this summer. If all you need is a space to sit for a short trip, they are much better than airlines flying smaller aircraft. If you want service on board pick another...

Physics Rant: The Truth to Buoyancy in Diving

Or making us get on the airplane instead of getting in the airplane. In an aviation course or two that I took there were folks that referred to negative lift. That always caused a bit of problem with me.

    What courses are required?

Where would that be RJP? I do most of my diving in the St. Lawrence and have never been asked, nor ever heard anyone asking for a Drift Diving card.

Should Visual Inspections be made Law?

No. The inspection is valid as of the time it is completed. I fear that if you make it a law, then some lawyer will use the concept of the inspection as a means to find yet another person to include in the lawsuit should there be an incident/accident. As for the industry making it uniform...

    World's Largest Liveaboard

My trip report for my time on Cayo Menor is here. I think we will just spend our time in the north part of the island while the ships are in port. Last year we were diving off of the Divi when a ship came in. Before we entered the water we could see it in the distance. We could hear it for...
