Monterey diving April 8 and 9?

I love a good hijacking... Me, Dannobee, DLNDavid and ScubaLaurel ran into him a few (6?) months ago. He asked if he could dive with us but never broke out his famous business card. I wanted to let him, just to see what all the fuss was about, but Laurel scared him off almost immediately...

Monterey diving April 8 and 9?

Ishie: how are we ever going to get any new Fred stories if we warn everyone about him?

Need a Good non-tourist restaurant in Monterey

Another vote for Monterey Fish House. I even think it's a pretty good value for what you get (outstanding borderline-gourmet seafood). I still tolerate the breakwater deli for the tri tip, though the owner dude does give me a serious case of the creeps. I'm stoked to try some of these other...

Monterey diving April 8 and 9?

You should be able to find a buddy easily at San Carlos (a.k.a. breakwater). If you don't want to do that, you can always rent-a-divemaster from most of the Monterey shops. I did it with Monterey Bay Dive Center when I first moved up here and was pleased. Something like $80 for 2 shore...

    Single malt Scotch (Islay) afficionados

I don't know that I've tried Ardbeg 10. I've certainly seen it - I'll have to give it a sip next time I have the chance. It's peatier than Laphroaig?

    Single malt Scotch (Islay) afficionados

You guys need to stop posting to this thread - every time I see it, I have to go pour myself a scotch (Highland Park 18 this time, if you must know) Andy: if you've developed a fondness for Laphroaig, you are officially certified to try (and probably like) any scotch.

Monterey diving April 8 and 9?

Not sure whether you're going to be in Monterey or SF, but if it's SF and the Monterey thing doesn't work out, you're welcome to dive with us for abalone and on scuba at Stillwater Cove (N. of San Francisco) on Sunday 4/9. I agree with the posters above that you should be fine in your wetsuit...

    59F without a hood

I'm not sure what pain you're talking about, but I've gone diving 59 and colder without a hood with no ill effects. You're going to lose heat a lot faster with nothing insulating your head and you're going to become hypothermic a lot faster than you would with a hood on, but I know of no...

Need help to identify some creatures

Interesting. Who knew all environmental nuisances weren't ugly? I like the idea of the cup corals battling the lion fish to the brink of extinction. Sounds like a movie in the making to me...

Need help to identify some creatures

I'll venture a guess that he was talking about the basket stars. Don't they munch coral?

    x-shorts? whos got 'em?

Weird that my shipping was like $11 to Northern California and Humu's was 7. Whatever. I messaged my requested size to them after ordering a couple days ago. Haven't heard anything from them, but I haven't been losing any sleep over the $31 yet.

We need a new dive club

I've got room for at least one other person in my car if anyone wants to ride together from SF. From my house at least, it's not a bad drive at all - like an hour and a half, tops. And thanks for the reminder - we better add "blindness from drinking homemade beer" to the waiver.

    Flathead VIs

I've had one for a little over a year and a half and love it. I'm not particularly demanding - never below 130, never colder than upper 40s - but don't have any complaints.

We need a new dive club

Interactive calendar sounds good. Here's the tide forecast for Ft. Ross - doesn't look like a great morning for rock pickers. 2006-04-08 21:38 PDT 4.68 feet High Tide 2006-04-09 03:23 PDT 1.87 feet Low Tide 2006-04-09 05:09 PDT Moonset 2006-04-09 06:45 PDT Sunrise 2006-04-09...

    Single malt Scotch (Islay) afficionados

I go to the Whiskies of the World expo here in SF every year. The first year I went (maybe 5 years ago?), I went to a talk put on by Macallan about the old scotch they were about to put on the market. They poured five bottles of scotch for the 30 or so of us in attendance. The oldest was 1937...

    Single malt Scotch (Islay) afficionados

I still have about 1/4 bottle left of a 1978 Port Ellen I bought a few years ago. I haven't dipped into it in awhile, but this thread caused me to pour a little glass of it. It is excellent - shame they aren't still making it. If you're serious, I could see if the place I bought it from...

We need a new dive club

Nice - I was going to bring some homebrew but I haven't brewed in awhile and I think all I've got left is some serious imperial oatmeal stout I made for the holidays. It's pretty good, but is far from my best work and packs a little bit too much wallop for picnic beer (it's well over 10% ABV)...

does anyone "ship their gear ahead"

I've never done it with my scuba gear, but I've done it with golf clubs (there's actually a company that specializes in this). Never run into any issues with taxes and the like. When I've done it, it's when I'm done golfing and don't want to haul my clubs around on the rest of an extended...

We need a new dive club

Outstanding. I'll probably bring some hog island oysters and some (post-diving, of course) beer. ZKY - you want me to put a waiver form together? I don't usually admit it in public, but my day job is being a lawyer.

    Backplate weight?

Do you already have the Oxycheq wing? I'm sure you know this already, but no STA is necessary with the DSS singles wing. Edit: How did you type all that faster than my short blurb, Humu? Damnit!
