    Backup reg - Bungee Necklace

Though the Sea Cure is a very comfortable orthodontically correct mouth piece for the diver using it, my buddy generally doesn't like it. Thus, I use only standard mouth pieces on my regs. I use a piece of surgical tubing, overlapped the ends, two cable ties to hold it together, and put my...

    Dive Log Book

Kind of like PADI's Adventure Log system (I'm sure that SSI's new system is very similar). I am able to keep track of my training, my diving, my equipment, and so forth all in one convenient location with tabs. I'm sure once I tire of it I'll look at other options. Currently looking into...

    Primary Light suggestions

Texasmike, I would suggest a primary with something like 13-14 watts of power using a xenon bulb. A good back up would be a halogen with a little less power. Of course, if you're going to get into more tech diving, then start looking at the 30-50 watt range.

The Great local dive shop vs. online debate

Let's hear an Amen to bradymsu's comment; Texas is a bit far from the Great Lakes. Gotta love those ship wrecks!! Yeah Baby!!! But, Lake Travis isn't a bad dive (just nothing really to see). However, we aren't here to see things, right? Just to blow bubbles..... :p On the issue of...

    Snorkel

I once tried aquaseal to attatch a piece of velcro to my snorkle and another to my bcd. Unfortunately, on a giant stride entry it would pop off. Over time the velcro has come off of both and the idea has not been revisited.

    Just needs some opinions..kids diving

The PADI system is structured to send children through SASY/Bubblemakers then onto the Sealteam (www.padisealteam.com) and then onto actual certification at age 10. Talk to you local store about getting into a class. Although I don't believe that all children should get certified, I believe...

    Cost of an AIR FILL................

$4-7 for 80's to 3000 and $8-12 for nitrox. Additional mixes available for additional charges. :)

    two for tea

I have been diving on computers for over 10 years and have logged more than 400 hours on them. I dive with an Oceanic Datamax Sport (my first) and a Suuton Vyper (my new one). The Oceanic is my backup, except on nitrox dives. I am looking at getting another Nitrox computer for backup purposes...

    Suunto Cobra vs. Uwatec Aladin

The difference is in how they monitor PO2 for Nitrox and nitrogen when diving air: in other words their algorithms. The Suuto line uses the Reduced Bubble Gradient while the Uwatec line uses the ZHL8 ADT model. Both are considered top of the line in how they calculate no-stop diving. However...

data plus 2 or stratus 1 or nitek computer?????

Depends on the type of diving you wish to do. I would recommend at the very least, get a Nitrox compatible computer. I dive with a Suuto Vyper, and love it, however I started on an Oceanic Datamax Sport (hockey puck, as Texasmike so affectionately calls them) without problems. The issue with...

    Backup for a computer

I know that manufacturers tell you in the user manual to have a back up in case of a failure. I have been diving with computers for over ten years and have logged over 400 hours on them and have yet to experience the so-called failures that are mentioned in these manuals. Computers are so...

    Martini's Anyone?

Narcosis is the effect nitrogen has on the CNS. Under pressure, nitrogen will dissolve quickly into the fatty deposits around the nerve endings called synapses. These will then swell (as tissues do when irritated) and cause a delay in firing. In other words, irrational judgements can occur...

    Ditch that weight..

hmmmm...interesting question. I've seen sources that say 60% or 40% should be ditchable. I think that the best bet is to set your rig up and practice on a shallow dive. Now I'm not condoning a rapid ascent here, you need some control in the environment. I know that if I'm diving dry and am...

    Snorkel

While most training agencies have standards dictating that students will have snorkels during training, I tend not to use one in my everyday diving. There are situations that no snorkel should ever be used on the mask: cave/cavern, wreck penetration, ice (hey, hard to snorkel back to the hole)...

The Final Chapter On Solo Diving

It's been a long time coming. I have always felt that certification agency have been somewhat hypicritical about their standards. They state that one must always dive with a buddy, however how many professionals do you know that dive alone (ie Divemasters taking a group down, instructors...

    Rising to the top

First, excellent recovery! Second, why add air in BCD to get off bottom if you are neutrally bouyant? A good lung full of air should get you off the bottom. Furthermore, if concerned about kicking up silt, a good strong scull with the hands will allow one to correct direction, steer, go...

    Tell the truth ....

I have been diving for 13 years and just finally picked up a safety sausage for a trip to cozumel last year. Have always had a whistle, though it never really worked that well. And, I do not own a dive alert. I do most of my diving in fresh water lakes that I know like the back of my hand and...
