Why are you called.....The Great Screen Name Thread

Mine's pretty original :D Ummm...JMS are my initials, diving is what I like to do, better than a day at the "office." I see that many people have names derived from when BBS were common place. I don't remember my handle back then, but I belonged to a group called the Chocolate Bunnies From...

Silk Thermal wear under your wetsuit

What a visual... I wear silk glove liners, but I also dive dry. Silk under a wetsuit would lose whatever thermal properties it may have had skiing. Get a drysuit, maybe it'll work there.

    new dry suit!!!!!

Sounds good to me. I have been diving dry for years and never took a course. Just got a little "instruction" from some diving buds and practiced practiced practiced and read a little until I got it right. And, see your profile, dry is the only way to go here in the upper midwest. Man...

    Which Is Better

A Can of Worms, Yes.... I do not believe that one Agency is better than another, however, the instructor and his/her experiences, level of aptitude, the motivation to keep up on the changes and latest developments in the industry, and the ability to teach those aforementioned in a concise and...

    Questions..

According to PADI, as that seems to be the going quotes above, after OW, they recommend 60 feet max until you get AOW, more experience, or dive with someone with more experience such as a dive pro. At that point they recommend 100 feet. Now, there is no card reader at 60 feet asking for an AOW...

    Ocean related groaners...

Not to be out done: 1) What's the difference between Michael Jackson and a plastic bag? One is dangerous to children the other to carry groceries. 2) One that is told in class: How do you shoot a blue fish? With a blue fish gun. How do you shoot a red fish? Betcha...

    instructors and gear

Two Sets.... Many instructors that I know use two sets: one for the pool and one for the open water. The reason being that many instructors don't use very thick wetsuits in the pool and thus can use a "leaner" bc versus a 7mm wet or drysuit in the OW where a BC with some lift would be nice...

    Wetsuit Hood to Drysuit Hood?

I did as ID suggested with my first drysuit: cut the wetsuit hood skirt off and used it as a hood for my drysuit. It worked quite well as it fit my head nicely. The problem that I ran into was when I attempted to us my FFM: couldn't figure out how to make it seal while wearing the hood. My...

If You Could Replace 1 Piece of Gear . . .

My Black Diamond for something a little more versital. Not that the BD isn't a good BC, but I wish to expand my horizons and I do not think that it will allow me to do so. Thus, looking at a wing and back plate setup, like X-tek, transpac II, etc. A selection of regs and dedicated tanks...

    Fraction of O2 vs PPO2

Curious: Explain or direct me to resource(s) explaining the concept of Fraction of Oxygen in the Breathing Loop versus PPO2 in the loop. I know that Semi Closed rebreathers use teh fraction of oxygen theory and Closed rebreathers use PPO2 as the measure to inject O2 or not to inject O2...

What are the sacraments of diving?

Do not go ice diving after a night shift and several cups of coffee. Bad combination that adds up to a bad experience. (For those that use a snorkel) Make sure that you have switched from snorkel to reg before descending, because that first gulp at 5 feet sucks. Make sure that if you need...

Need help making modification to Apeks Tx-50

If the one in your mouth is integrated to a FFM, what one does your buddy or the diver who is out of air go for. . . . ? I'm hoping that they go for the colored octopus because I don't what them ripping my mask off :p

    Recreational Rebreathers

I have read King_Neptunes glowing review of several rebreathers out there; I have read several of the threads here on the board. One of the threads stated something to the effect that using rebreathers "recreationally" is probably not the best use of a rebreather. 1) I guess the question...

    Creepy things found diving

Something creepy........I have not run across anything like what I saw on my OW dives for certification. I was diving with the class in Raliegh, NC in a quarry that had flooded out leaving all the equipment for exploration. Well, as I was checking out a conveyor belt I swam up to the control...

The question that got me flogged on another board

    1) Where to ultimately hope to teach? Wisconson probably doesn't offer the opportunites that you need or want. And, many instructors do so part-time and hold full-time employment in another industry. 2) I agree with the diversification of your diving experience. The more adventures that...

    A sad out come ....

This is my very opinionated view: While seeing sharks up close a personal is something that many divers would like to do (me included), I believe that feeding the fish will ultimately alter their relationship with the sea. Look at the National Park system; do we feed bears there? No. If...

What suits do colder climates wear?

I know a couple of people from the UK that just dive in a good 7mm wetsuit/farmerjohn getup. However, they are considering moving to dry. I personally dive dry; did the wesuit thing for awhile until I had enough money for a "semi-dry" (read leaking drysuit) and saved a few more pennies and...

    Rebreather Nirtogen?

If trimix is a wonderful invention, and judging by the literature it is, do rebreathers do trimix? And if so, do they do the different types fo trimix for the different applications (aren't there like two or three different mixes?)? Furthermore, why do some divers dis the recreational...

    Just some understandings

Thanks for all the good information thus far. I am currently in the data collection stage and eyeing more technical oriented diving. However, the discussion above has raised some questions in my mind: 1) What on earth is a "helicopter turn 360 degree turn using no hands and maintaining the...
