Chicago Area Diving Legend Bud Brain Passed Away Thursday Jan. 5th.

From the UASC board: On 01/05/2017 Bud Brain, a Chicago area diving legend, passed away at the age of 94. Many of us knew Bud, but for those that do not, let's just say that he was one of the pioneers of local diving. He caught the diving bug early and soon became a PADI diving instructor...

    Webers Joy /Witches Hut

The northern sites have foliage above and behind them, laced with trails. They are also on the road to the Rincon, so lots of transient locals passing by. Southern sites are less traveled by locals and wider open. There is cover but it is narrow and bordered by salt pans. Don't leave...

    Dive site: The Rock (westcoast)

One of my fave sites on Bonaire. You have to work a little bit to get there, but it will have improved your skills after you find it.

Cayman Museum Exhibit on Dive History and Vintage Equipment

Was there 2 weeks ago. They were still setting up their display rooms. Very nice museum, gives yo a good overview of Cayman and their "T" shirts are $8.

Anyone going or done any dive trips overseas recently?

When do you get your hip done? These things seem to go without much drama these days, good luck. The yo-yo yeomen at the wheel of the USS Kittiwake off Grand Cayman salute you.

Vivid Reds makes pictures look unreal

Late to the thread, but you have your camera saturation level set to high (the second setting from the bottom). This might be the reason your reds are too rich. Olympus cameras' chip sets seem to be more sensitive to reds.

PADI Self Reliant Diver with Spare Air?

Late to the thread, partially because of a dive trip : ). If I find myself "riding the pony" because my main gas supply has run out (stupid, stupid) or a problem developed (possibly stupid) I am not going to be fussing with a DSMB, I'm going up. However much a safety stop is advisable, so long...

    IST Pro-Ear Mask.

They haven't changed anything around very much with these masks. I am still using the Pro-Ear 2000 model, 200+ dives so far. You really can dive with your ears dry. The hoses from the mask to the ear cups are attached through the mask skirt with plastic hex-nuts. It is possible to attach...

    Which focus light....?

I would suggest you PM some of the dive photo folks who work for dealers here on the board. They could give you the best information. Jack Connick and Phil Rudin are two who come to mind. My 2¢ is that most focus lights have a quenching slave which turns the light off when a strobe is...

    Knee Replacement :(

Bummer about the alignment issue. On my knee they trimmed the backside of my knee cap and implanted a formed bearing plate, which aligns the ligament over the replacement joint. Been away hence a tardy reply. Hope things resolve well for you with the second try.

    Hole in Ear Drum

The Pro Ear mask permits you dive with dry ears. It has ear cups with equalization tubes from the front part of the mask. I have been using these masks for 200+ dives. I have no commercial interest in this product. Swimming Ear Protection Diving Masks ProEar 2000

    Knee Replacement :(

Peter, Have you tried massaging your knee cap? Moving it slightly side to side to free it up? I found the quite helpful to get things sliding the way they should. A tip for wet suit donning. Either wear polyester dive socks or put a plastic bag over your foot before putting your leg into...

    Curacao - Shore Or Boat?

RE: "At some destinations, like the Florida Keys, there are so-called '6-pack' boats, where they don't go out with over 6 divers'.." The so called 6 pack is a USCG minimum licensing level for commercial boat operation. The license is an OUPV (Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels)...

Looking For The Perfect Water Shoe/dive Boot

NRS (Northwest River Supply) has quite a variety of watershed. Their market is mostly kayak-canoe-raft users. I have used their Kicker model shore diving off Bonaire and boat diving in warm water. Men > Footwear > Water Shoes at nrs.com

    Wind Waves And Shore Entry

A strong second for the BSDME book. You can shift your diving rather easily on Bonaire to avoid surge. Prevailing winds are the trade winds from the east. They kick up waves on the windward side of the island, but flatten the seas on the west side. The most common dive sites are located...

Bonaire Crime - Our experience - Looking for input to share

There have been 34 pages of posts made here about crime on Bonaire over the month of March. A couple of take aways: It seems an isolated or individual rental property is more prone to B&E than established resorts. I have no clear sense whether there is a variation of the theft rate among...
