    opportunities as a dive professional

I, too, finished law school before becoming a Dive Instructor. No regrets. Go to college first, and see if you can take some of your courses in school. I took some diving classes through my school, and they were much cheaper. You'll (probably) save a few bucks, and kill two birds with one...

Loved it. Loved The Last Dive also.

    Disabled/Handicapped divers

Welcome to the club! I hope you have a long and enjoyable diving career! And I hope that, like me, you can move away from Wisconsin (Mequon) and head to the tropics!!!

Lessons Learned during OW checkout dives..

I cannot grasp that a PADI instructor would skip the CESA in open water. I certainly make sure all my students do it. But I can't speak for all instructors (but on this, I should be able to). I would just like to thank the poster for posting his thoughts. It's nice to hear from the new...

Deep water diver finds skeleton of fellow diver

I dive warm and shallow. 9.5 hours after my first dive, I've already done a few more, had something to eat and probably a few beers.... But hey, different stroke, I guess. More power to him.

    Cobra Safety Stop Indicator

I agree completely with this post. Prior to whipping out my Cobra manual, I "KNEW" that there wasn't supposed to be a Stop sign during the recommended safety stop, because during my RSS, only the countdown is displayed. After reading the manual, the STOP sign should also be present during...

I'm new here, so I appreciate your effort. Thanks for the advice!

Please help - need advice on buying gear!

My impression of cave and wreck divers (and this is only from reading and other second hand info, as I exclusively dive in clear tropical water) is that they basically have two or more of everything because they're usually solo diving. I would consider the penetration reels extra...

Please help - need advice on buying gear!

Valid point. Obviously consistency has its merits. On the other hand, if what you're doing is basically warm water non-penetration dives, why bring all the extra gear all the time?

    Rescue Diver Cert.

Rescue is my favorite class to teach. I think the students get the most out of it. As to whether you're ready for it, I guess that's up to you. I would ask this: Do you ever go out diving with just you and a buddy (or a small group), or are you always out with chartered tours with...

Please help - need advice on buying gear!

I am not cave or wreck certified, so I can't even hazard a guess as to what equipement you will need. I imagine you'll have to get special equipment for that. I, too, am a lawyer and money was an object but I still went top o the line (in my opiniont). When I first moved to Saipan, I got a...

    What's your favorite computor?

I dive with a suunto cobra and a stinger. I've never had anyone complain about having to turn a dive too soon. But they are more conservative. I don't mind, and I kinda appreciate it. Since I'm a tad overweight, I try not to push the limits too much.

Big dissapointment failed my Last 2 OW dives.

You sound like a diver I would be proud to certify. Knowing your limits is absolutely essential. Fly to Saipan, and I'll finish your class for ya. Or go to the Caymans or some other warm place that's closer. You owe yourself a vacation as a reward for your good judgment.

How did you get into scuba?

Took it in college for my P.E. requirement so I could graduate (when college takes you 7.5 years, you'll do just about anything to get out). I was absolutely miserable. Did my OW checkout dives in a silty lake in Wisconsin. Freezing, with nothing to see but muck and the occasional grey fish...

    Let's hear YOUR shark tale!

I made the mistake of, during one of the checkout dives in an OW class, pointing out to the students a small white-tip reef shark that was just cruising by, absolutely minding its own business. One student was not impressed and shot towards the surface. I caught her and brought her back down...

    Diving in Saipan?

I live and dive exclusively with Abracadabra and have to agree with the above poster that, last year the shop was somewhat disorgainzed due to the restaffing that occurred due to the change in ownership. I recommend Abracadabra or Stingray (some divemasters work for both operations) if you're...
