    rented out of date tanks

Well, you could probably work it out if you knew the calculations.. but I would have thought 1 inch plate would be more than enough to stop a cylinder. And welded properly, welds should be stronger than the original material - although getting good penetration on 1 inch plate is gonna need a...

My 1st Dive Trip being ruined by a Cold!

Firstly, I'd load up on vitamin C - at least 1000mg/day, maybe even 2000. It work for me... About the sinus question.. If your sinuses are *truely* clear, then I personally would dive... this is becuase: - Under normal conditions I can equalise by moving my tounge (seriously!) - I'm a...

    Sea Sick on a live-aboard?????

Hm. I've never done a liveaboard, but frequently use dayboats. Nothing really works for me, I always get sick... I've tried the scop patch, the electric wristband, the regular (pressure) wristband, ginger, travacalm, the Royal Navy one (that you can't get in the US yet).. I've spewed...

    Aluminum or Steel Tanks?

Here in the UK, AL tanks are almost twice as expensive as steel ... about the only AL tanks people buy are stage cylinders (and most people still use steel for stages too) You can buy a 12L steel for around £100 if you know where to shop. My 7L AL cost £170. Steel 7L's are around £70-80.

Split Fins in Strong Current and on Surface?

Actually, perhaps I will stop wasting my time as I can see where this is headed. Suffice to say. I have no problem with split fins on the surface (I swim on my back) or in the water. And UP, regarding your poorly disguised jabs at my fitness level - I'd expect alot more from a moderator.

Split Fins in Strong Current and on Surface?

I guess you don't dive much in current either..

Split Fins in Strong Current and on Surface?

FACT: I swim faster with less energy used underwater and on the surface in my split fins. You can theorise all you want, but at the end of the day I know what works for me.

Split Fins in Strong Current and on Surface?

Never tried them have you? I always beat (usually by a significant margin) everybody on a surface swim. I've personally have never had a problem in a current, but then again I tend to stay away from swimming into a current no matter what fins I'm wearing. The only real disadvantage I've...

To EC or not to EC, that is the question...

Otherwise known as 'suicide bottles'. The problem is that it's extremely difficult to control how much air you get when you crack the bottle. Also, it's not hard to accidently bump the valve and open the bottle which then inflates your bcd and sends you to the surface in double quick time...

How to qualify as a Tech diver?

Well, I'm going to break with the convention of the board and rather than debating semantics or berating your attitude, I'm going to actually answer your question! :wow_2: Around here (UK), TDI is the most common 'tech' training agency. Some instructors teach a combined TDI/IANTD course...

    Skin Bends

That does seem high... When you suffer an o2 hit underwater, it's not the hit that will kill you - it's drowning. An o2 hit on land is much more managable ... providing you dont bite your tounge off :yippie17:

    DIY Backplate materials

How good are your fabrication & welding skills? Remember this thing is going into the water. Powdercoat would help protect against corrosion - until you scratched it. It would be better to build it in stainless, but that requires a greater skill level than mild steel. I think cutting...

    Nothing to say

maybe set it to 0 (disabled)? I don't see the point in having a message asking people to post.. then again if I saw such a message I would probably ignore it anyway.

Tank recommendations for a girl of smallish stature?

I don't know much about cylinders in the US.. but I'd say doubling up is always preferable to a big single. I thought you guys buy LP steel's and overfill them ?

    Canon S50 setting in housing

You can't. Well, I can't work out how to do it. It's the only thing I don't like about the S50 + canon housing. Just make sure you have set everything you think you will need before you lock it up..

Where to put surface Marker Bouy

Is it for emergencies only? or are you planning on usng it every dive? Some people bungee it to the bottom of the backplate, but I think it would be a pain to get at easily. You could also try the side of the backplate. It also depends on how small it is when stowed.. I have a large...

Diving the long hose on a REC rig

[edited to remove quote of deleted personal attacks - JG] I dive a long hose in OW when I'm diving doubles + wing (which is on pretty much every dive atm). When I go to the red sea at the end of the month, I'm taking my poodle jacket BC (shock, horror!) and an octopus length hose on my...
