    Turneffe Islands

tigercrane, I thought that CC was a bit spendy, too and the format of diving on Cay Caulker seems to be to sign up for an entire day of diving with a minimum of two dives. This was true for every shop we looked at and there are around 5 or 6 dive centers on Cay Caulker. It seemed odd to...

    Equalizing

Jacket_fan, I'd like to add my vote to seeing your family doctor and maybe getting refered off to an ear doctor. If it's painful at 6', it's not going to get better at 12' or deeper. Stop, come up and continue to equalize until there is no pain or pressure at all. I'm sure you've covered...

    Punta Cana that depressing?

So, even if this is a deadthread, why would anyone GO to Sto. Domingo? Sounds like bottom of the barrel diving. I could understand if there were something else driving you to the island, but, jeez, it sounds like somewhere, anywhere else would be better. =Terry

    Turneffe Islands

If you're near Ambergris, Cay Caulker is nearby too. We stayed for $20 per night for a double in Tom's (recommended on this board). It's nice, but not spectacular. Food would run $20 a day or so and diving $100-150 per day depending on where you went. =Terry

    Turneffe Islands

"Belize Turneffe is not a modest budget place. Honduras Utila Lodge cost less....." Absolutely agree with Utila being the cheapest places (and a fine place) to dive. Even Cay Caulker in Belize is more expensive by 50-100% than Utila. Still cheap by many standards, I expect.

    Corn Island?

Yep, we were there for a week last March and it's super laid back. You take a plane from Managua to Bluefields that continues on to Big Corn Island. That's kind of a dumpy place with cars, hustlers, etc. Then you take a water taxi/panga out to Little Corn. Takes 45 minutes or so. You get...

Costa Rica on a budget recommendations?

This is on rumor but I hear that there are dive operations at Drake's Bay (a really cool place and not a rumor - have visited and loved it but in pre-diving days). They would likely go out to Caño Island. There are some spendy all inclusives, but I hear that there are smaller dive ops in the...

    Blue Hole Belize Poll

I'm glad we dived it, saw good stuff going down and coming back up, but not at 140'. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't bother again especially at $150 a pop and two hours of very early morning (6am) boat ride. We did avoid the crowds and for that I'm very, very thankful. The boats were lining up...

    Blue Hole A Gimmick?

http://www.ambergriscaye.com/pages/town/greatbluehole.html claims the story of Jacques Cousteau dynamiting his way into the blue hole is an urban legend. Nice pic of the hole, though...

    Blue Hole Belize Poll

I'm for a "did it and I'm glad but it's too damned expensive and or too much trouble" school of thought. I thought the two dives we did with the BH, Long Cay Wall and Halfmoon Cay were ok, but not spectacular. This after the most beautiful dives of my life in Cuba's west end, however and being...

    Blue Hole A Gimmick?

Is the deep dive (135'-140') in Belize a gimmick as claimed by one of the guide books? Belize Diving on Cay Caulker will not go there b/c the lady that runs the shop believes it's too dangerous. We went with Paradise Down and were very carefully handled - 2 DM's per group of 8 divers, one...

    belize in may??

Why skip the Blue Hole unless you've already done it? I know it's a bit short (my dive was 23 min bottom time) and it's a hell of a long way from anywhere (2 hrs from Cay Caulker), expensive ($150) and maybe a bit loosely controlled by some shops (we met a BOW lady who'd made the dive last...

trip report, Honduras, dive, raft, spanish school

Thanks, Bill! I saw what looked to be the (?) school building on the inland side of the main st in Utila last year when we were there - forget the name of the school. My friend and I went to Tela to the Mango Spanish School there - it was only ok. Nice setting, but I thought a bit dogmatic on...

Do they serve coors light in Grand Cayman?

Toss a case of Curs Lite into a spare suitcase. I'm sure you can't hurt the stuff.

Can anyone recommend or comment on Deep Blue Diving Adventures out of Golfo de Papagayo, which, I think, is also on the north Pacific coast. =Terry

    Whale Sharks in Utilla

We were there in Feb. 2003 with Utila Dive Center - on 14 times in the water with snorkel gear, I saw 11 whale sharks. One dive with Utila Water Sports and 1 for 1 there. The secret is not only to go during the right time of year - Jan-Mar and maybe into April, but to do it at the right time...

    Travelling + Safety in Honduras

I wouldn't pass up a chance to dive in the Bay Islands because of safety concerns. Like Doc V mentioned, SPS and Tegucigalpa after dark are not recommended for someone with as much resource as you among people that poor. Roatan and the other Bay Islands are a lot different. You can safely...

    Maria la Gorda

Has anybody dived Maria la Gorda? It's on the westmost tip of Cuba and supposedly one of the primo spots to dive there. Any other Cuban recommendations would be very much appreciated. Looks like we're only gonna have 3 or 4 days diving, but my Lonely Planet Cuba dive book makes the place...
