    Top 10 "Don'ts" for Newbies

    1. Don't dive with unsafe divers. 2. Don't listen to unsafe divers. 3. Don't go into an overhead environment.

    Flying after diving question.

Yes, there is a table that clearly shows minimum times to ascend to particular altitudes depending on your repetitive dive group. No, I'm not going to tell you where to find it. It's in the public domain, though.

DCS and the immune system redux

An immunological component to DCS has been hypothesized for many years. The theory is that bubbles cause a response by the "complement system," and the response causes biochemical changes that may result in some of the symptoms commonly associated with DCS. Having read the thread in which...

    DCS and Bone Density

Rapid decompression can adversely affect bones. Dysbaric osteonecrosis, for example, may result from a single exposure to rapid decompression. Aseptic bone necrosis and bone lesions are not uncommon afflictions for commercial divers. In one study published in 1974, nearly 60% of the 450...

    Boric acid and alcohol solution?

One teaspoon of boric acid powder to one pint of rubbing alcohol (70% solution). Shake to dissolve. Apply 4-5 drops to the ear; leave the solution in for 5-10 minutes. Stop if it stings when applied to the ear.

What do you do/don't do on your Open Water Dives?

The underwater navigation is an "instructor sequenced skill," (if I recall correctly) meaning it can be conducted during any open water dive. I was taught to brief and demonstrate the skill on dry land and have the students run land courses multiple times before putting them in the water...

    Diving and beards

Didn't they teach you in your Advanced Nitrox/Decompression Procedures class that the half time on a beard is 3 minutes, so by 20 minutes into the dive the beard is fully saturated? :D

    IDEA to PADI Crossover

She will receive a PADI c-card (albeit a "Junior Adventure Diver" card) if she goes the Adventure Diver route. Any PADI dive center (and there are a lot) would recognize the Adventure Diver card alone and would not require additional proof of earlier certification. Non-PADI shops should...

    IDEA to PADI Crossover

I won't disagree one bit with Walter on the value of additional training. Also, training your children is your call, but I personally don't certify divers as young as your daughter. Off my soapbox now... The closest thing to a "cross-over" at the Open Water level is the PADI experienced...

    PADI couldn't find my records :( 1970's...

You might want to talk to the instructor about the PADI "Experienced Diver" track. If you have proof of previous diving experience, an instructor can issue a C-card without you having to repeat the entire class. You do have to complete other requirements, though.

where to find a battery for a D9

Check this thread for details on changing the battery. The thread notes that some 2450's don't fit because of the battery profile and it has pictures you can click on to see which one works. And you can find the battery here. The battery sold by LeisurePro is a CR2450N, although I don't...

Should I buy this? Need some advice...

The Black Diamond is one big BCD. I have one in my teaching "fleet," and it's a beast to pack (for comparison, I can fit my bp/w, single tank adapter, jetfins, 5mm boots, and 3mm wetsuit into my travel bag; can only fit the Black Diamond and fins in the same bag). Jim gave you some good...

It looks remarkably like someone reaching into his back pocket for his wallet. :D Congratulations on your accomplishment!

What's the difference between DM and AI 20 skills

There's actually a secret 21st skill for assistant instructors, but since it's a secret, PADI only refers to the "20 skills" outside of the IDC. So really, the 20 skills are the same, except for the secret 21st skill that can only be revealed during the IDC. And it's a secret, so don't ask any...

    Decompression terminology and mechanics

I think the answer is actually yes...and maybe no. In the bubble models that treat dissolved and free phase gas: for dissolved inert gas, the answer is "yes"; for bubbles, I think the answer is "maybe no."

    Decompression terminology and mechanics

Not necessarily. Tissue ongassing and offgassing of the dissolved gas phase is modeled as an exponential equation in the bubble models such as VPM and RGBM. So to that extent, yes, ongassing and offgassing "rates" are modeled by the same type of equation (differences in halftimes and other...

    Decompression terminology and mechanics

Now you know why it's called decompression THEORY. Haldanean models assume that all gas is dissolved. In that sense, a Haldanean model is a "single phase" model. Bubble models attempt to explain not only elimination of dissolved inert gas, but also the elimination of the "free phase"...

    PADI 200m swim test question

The swim test is conducted in "confined water," which can be a swimming pool or an open water site with clarity, calmness, and depth similar to a swimming pool. You only have to do it once, though.

No, you're thinking GUE. :) http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/new-divers-those-considering-diving/287780-how-find-excellent-scuba-class.html]This thread discusses what else besides price you should consider.

    PADI Altitude Diver Course Material

PADI does not publish a separate book for the Altitude specialty. The altitude section in the Adventures in Diving book covers the material. The items you need to plan an altitude dive are the "theoretical depth chart" found in the AOW book and a dive table. The PADI eRDPml can be used for...
