I never got the AOW as it wasn't required. I went OW, nitrox, tech nitrox, deep air , full trimix. Never got rescue either.
One of the reasons I always avoided cattle boats was silliness like this.
Someone certified overseas or long ago almost certainly had more instruction than some 50...
Apparently " tech diver " may also be used to describe one who is an arrogant pontificating boor
I follow the live and let dive philosophy for the most part. If someone wants to put on a Ranger and wear a pony in an x bracket diving incidental deco and call themselves a technical diver then...
2Kt current and 6" vis in 30' with numerous entanglement hazards count?
Otherwise anyone wearing a Zeagle Ranger or BWOD and all black gear.
Anything unpaid is recreational.
If the population is deemed sustainable, then using a commercial fisherman to determing the catch rate per hour or per hook is fiscally more responsible that running a multimillion dollar fisheries research vessel and crew to do the same.
There are quite a few fisheries that have cooperative...
Most shark meat is delicious, only a few are inedible or taste bad.
The meat sells for as much or more than beef. Thresher and mako are particularly desirable but sandbar, blacktip and spinner great as well.
There is ton of misinformation spun about shark consumption in America based on facts...
Not that hard to find bottom or bouyed wrecks in the Keys, go at sunup to beat the charters to the bouys.
Unmarked stuff is usually fishier/ less sharky that stuff that gets hammered daily.
You can see bottom on the outer reef and occasionally on the inshore reef.
We have rescued 1 charter...

Any polespear will work. I just used a shaft with a 3 tine paralyzer without any band and caught over a ton per year.
The potential punishment is lax compared to what would have happened if they'd been caught in the act by the fishermen.
Not to mention it's not just the interference with legal fishing but also grand theft, interference with law enforcement and destruction of evidence.
Some are kept, some are released alive. Depends on the reason for the cruise.
There are also targeted studies farmed out to commercial fishermen where the catch is kept and sold to determine CPUE which is the rwte at which that specific catch is caught at and that helps to determine allowable catch
Interfering with fishermen or hunters going about thier business legally doesn't generally end well. And in Florida it is particularly stupid. Hope these guys get some time.
Shark longlining is pretty selective and is used by fisheries managers at NOAA to assess populations.
There is AI already being used to extract possible shipwrecks from bathymetric data.
I scanned a swath 300' wide to find wrecks and structure that might hold fish or lobster. It took several hours to mark each potential wreck and reef.
Spring migration to the North along the beach happens in the spring.
Schools of cobia follow and it's common to see boats following the rays targeting the cobia.
I had a fall dive in SC where I saw a manta, 2 spotted eagle rays and several southern stingrays all in the same dive.
