Warning for Monterey Divers (especially women): Beware of Fred

My wife (then girlfriend) and I dove with Fred S. It was our first dive after getting our certifications and when he offered to be our dive buddy we accepted. We didn't have any strange incident with him however. We were a little thrown off that he asked to be our dive buddy, but we figured...

Why would you want to dump weight?

I am still a new diver, certified last summer, done about 25 dives. I wear part of my weight in pouches attached to my tank straps, the other part in pouches attached to the harness of my bp/wing. I cannot dump weight instantly, but I can reach back, open the pouches and toss the weights out...

    good deal on 2 tanks?

She's 5'9" but less than 140. Still, I figured I had to give her the steel. I decided to go for the steel 80 for her, but not the AL80. Since she uses her air more slowly I guess I'll just save up for the steel 100 for me (thought about pescador's suggestion, you recommend it over the 120?)...

    Jet Fins Size for Women?

My sister wears the Large, though her feet are big for a woman (size 10 -- she is tall). It is a lot smaller than the XL Jet Fin though. I wear an XL Jet Fin and size 11 shoes (men's). We both have hard-soled wetsuit booties. Mine are a snug fit (most other hard soled booties won't fit)...

    Ocean Master Z4

Yes, they all have the q-strap. I like it but certainly not everyone will. PurduEE has good advice, if you go to another country with that mask you should get a replacement strap beforehand. I guess the bottom line is get what fits your face and can accomodate your corrective lenses. The...

    Ocean Master Z4

I use the their Z2 mask. I don't really use the purge much, but it doesn't bother me either. My dive buddy has the same mask and she uses the purge valve all the time. I tried the Z4, but the extra windows are pretty distorted (you see about 5 feet behind you when underwater instead of...

    good deal on 2 tanks?

The AL80 says catalina on in it, I don't know how to tell what alloy it is. One tank is for me and one will be for my fiancee, so I am not concerned with switching back and forth. The valve for the steel is not compatible with my regulator so I have to get a converter. That aluminum tank...

    good deal on 2 tanks?

Hello all, I just saw what I thought was a good deal for a couple of used tanks, but I am not too sure about pricing. It was an almost new AL80 for $50 (though kind of a bright color) and a used Steel 80 for $120. It would be $10 more each separately. The steel needs to be hydro...

    Custom vs. Henderson Wetsuits??

Also, in the San Diego area. Go to Ocean Enterprises (on Balboa) and ask for the guy that does the custom wetsuits. They can get custom made wetsuits by jmj-wetsuits. These are high quality, very warm suits. The price is also reasonable for a custom suit. It has worked very well for me. It...

    Should I get PADI-certified?

Yes, I got my YMCA open water certification and for a few extra buck got the CMAS card. I was told that it should be internationally recognized.

    How many dives per year?

I got certified last summer August and have done about 20 dives since. I hope to up the frequency though! Usually I'll just do one dive on the days I go out. It is only about a 15 minute drive to the beach so that is no problem. Some days when I don't feel like lugging around all of the...

    lil charcoal grey shark?

Thanks for all of your replies. I have been searching online for pictures. The body type of a nurse shark seems to fit. It was not a slender, long shark. A little more stout and short. I just am not sure if the white tip fits with some type of nurse shark. Could have been the light or...

    lil charcoal grey shark?

I was snorkeling recently over at La Jolla Cove in San Diego and I saw, from about 15 feet away, what appeared to be a charcoal grey shark of about 3.5 feet long, with a white tip on its dorsal fin. I couldn't find it on some field ID sites. Now I wonder if my eyes deceived me. What could...

Looking for a new mask w/purge...need suggestions

I wanted a mask without a purge because I don't use it anyway, but the mask (after trying many) that fit me the best happened to be the Oceanmaster Z2 that comes with a purge. I have not had problems with the purge though -- I just clear my mask the normal way. I also wouldn't mind having one...

Looking for a good laptop backpack

I like the Tom Bihn brand too. His "monolith" is a great bag, the suspension built in on the bottom is a good thing. Plus, it is vertical in shape so it fits in a backpack well. I use it with a regular backpack, not a special laptop bag. It's the same argument as the "scuba bags with scuba...

    halcyon or oxycheq

I have Halcyon, my fiancee has Oxycheq. Both are good. The Halcyon is a little narrower. Her Oxycheq 45 has the same profile as the Oxycheq 30. My Halcyon Pioneer 36 has side gussets that some people do not like (I don't care about it). Hers requires an sta, mine does not. I think that my...

Need new mask running out of ideas..

Here's another vote for Oceanmaster. I have the Z2 -- low volume, very comfortable strap, well built. My dive buddy has the same mask and a totally different face shape and it still fits her. It tried some others like the Mares X-Vision and they leaked for both of us (though the vision was good).

    Forgive Me.....I Forgot!!

My dive buddy just paid about $70 to replace her mask and snorkel after making the same mistake -- mask on the forehead. We swam out and as we were swimming I noticed some stingrays gliding across the ground beneath us. I suggested that she look so she could check them out. When she went to...

    Which Suunto computer?

I like the versa pro in addition to the vyper but... I find the vyper's menu driven interface to be easier to use. Learning to use this computer was straightforward. I have been very happy with my recent vyper purchase.
