Thoughts on Coco View Resort, Roatan

When we were there that surf & turf was lousy. Attempt at fancy for the sake of it but not actually any good. Wasn’t necessarily ingredients. They did much better when they cooked local food. Would have been better if they stuck to that. Too many bad attempts at “american” food. Salad bar was...

Liveaboard choice: Turks and Caicos or St. Kitts & Saba?

I'd expect you would see more big stuff in T&C, especially sharks. I wasn't impressed at all with the diving around St Kitts, and Saba didn't go well for us. (They had recently dredged the harbor at Saba and much area around it was covered in silt, conditions were poor and didn't allow much...

    Good News/Bad News

We were on Little a few weeks ago. Temps running 84-86. Some bleaching but a DM there said he thought it was recovering - though he wasn't sure if that was true or he was just trying to convince himself. Sometimes a lot of algae like that appears on Little, and I'm told it tends to disappear...

Thoughts on Coco View Resort, Roatan

I wonder if it has actually gotten better or we have a different perception. It's one of several reasons we don't go back. I would call it downscale summer camp buffet with limited options, and not very good. (Especially for vegetarians.)

What's in your bag, travel tips & tricks.

Time to resurrect this thread again. :) The Tumi bag I bought a few years back as a personal item/underseat bag, I’ve hated since day one. Too heavy and overbuilt, too much bag and not enough contents. Too many pockets of the wrong sort and I could never find anything. I’ve replaced it with...

Aqualung Wave - adding integrated weight pockets?

If she has her own gear she may as well use it in class and get used to it. I don't think you need to be trying to make it easier for the instructor, not like she is showing up with a vintage double hose reg. The Wave is like the simplest BC going.

Late December Diving Destination: Palau, Solomon, Philippines?

Travel to/within the Phillipines can be time consuming and a pain sometimes, but still might be easier and cheaper than Indonesia. Of course it depends on your destination(s) within the country. I think Philippines is definitely worth checking out if you haven’t yet. It’s been quite awhile...

Suggestions for beginner diving (OW) in Central America or Caribbean in November / December

Doing at least academics (quite common to do online now) and pool work at home makes for a more efficient use of vacation time. Then you can do your checkout dives at the destination (called an OW referral) and have more time to just go diving. That said, it sounds like you’re talking pretty...

    Considering Stuart Cove's in Nassau

If I were going to the Bahamas anyway I’d go diving, but I wouldn’t plan a land-based dive specific trip there unless you really want sharks. You might see plenty even not on a “shark” dive. Better to do liveaboard, but you say you don’t want that. (I’ve done the Aquacat twice, and they range...

Question Scuba Geocaches in the Caribbean?

To find scuba caches just set your filters to terrain 5, scroll around the map, and read descriptions on likely looking spots to find any that actually require scuba rather than snorkel/wading, or just a boat to get there. I see at least one off Cayman Brac and 2 off Roatan. I’m sure there are...

Where to see the most sea turtles?

I was also going to say Hawaii, but not for a 4 night trip from the east coast.

    Belize....Land & Sea

It's possible to stay south and do both, but you'll mostly be doing activities on different days - not diving in morning and land tours in afternoon, and you'll have long days for much of the land stuff. IMO there is much to be said for splitting a trip into ocean and inland parts and it sounds...

    Best Caribbean location for Diving

I would try Sandals Curacao. The diving is good in general, and if you have a car there are a lot of options if you want to get off the ranch. You don't often see sharks there and I haven't heard of any ops doing "shark dives." There are some wrecks, with the Tugboat and Superior Producer being...

Looking for a good steakhouse! (and/or other suggestions)

We always thought the rib factory was pretty good, but haven't been there in ages. Have you tried a Rijstafel place? That's something you won't make on your own.

    Last minute cheap lodging suggestions?

One thing with Coral Estates, its quite far from Dive Bus. Theres a dive op there, but not sure it would be an easy place to pick up a dive buddy if you need one. (No idea how current shop feels about solo diving.)

    Any Palau recomendations?

We did a kayak trip with Sam's tours. We actually went on a boat for the long runs to different areas and then got in the kayaks to explore when we got there. Included lunch on some island where we also went snorkeling. Very nice day.
