    Thinking of Going to Bonaire!

Sand Dollar has as small sandy beach with one of the best dive sites on the island just a few yards further west. There are two dive ops on site, along with two restaurants and a third across the road. More diving and a restaurant are at Buddy Dive, a 5 min walk north.

    Bonaire for newbies

Agree! Even after many dives on Bonaire, my wife and I found ourselves at one southern site and no trucks visible, north or south, for well over a mile. Probably a Sat. AM when many divers are departing and no new arrivals yet. We looked at each other and said, almost simultaneously, "I guess we...

Bonaire site recommendations for my first and last trip

Some of our most enjoyable Bonaire dives have resulted from unpredictable sightings of very large numbers (i.e., thousands) of schooling bigeye scad and boga. Neither fish species is large, of course, but the schools themselves are positively wonderful to watch and interact with. If you are...

    confession: I hate giant stride

Becca65--Here is my view. If your dislike of falling is a real impediment to diving, then you should address the issue directly. However, if you just worry about the act of falling, yet actually engage in it regardless of how much you might dislike it, then just put up with it, making efforts to...

failure rate of Scuba equipment and BCD

500 dives minus 20. Schrader valve corrosion to the point of persistent air leakage into the BCD. After about 430 dives. Failure of the HP hose to my gauges such that there was air leakage from the over-pressure holes. After about 450 dives.

    Tummy Problem While Diving

    Wear Crocs

I like the flip flops, but why not just do it the simple way and apply duct tape, sticky side up, directly to the bottoms of the feet? Harder to steal that way.

What are your thoughts on that "New material (that) steals oxygen from air"

Not true. At least one of the inventors did talk about it, although not in the published paper. Such "talk" would not have been appropriate in a typical scientific journal paper.

Advice for older divers in Bonaire

Sorry for my misunderstanding you. I did not realize that the size of the boat was an issue. Let me be a little more careful with my language. If the OP wishes to use BDA for shore dives onto Bari Reef from the BDA dock, a tank will have to be carried about 30 or so feet to a bench for gearing...

Advice for older divers in Bonaire

There are plenty of divers, old and young, able and not so able, who find the BDA dock to be just fine. Tank lugging is virtually non-existent unless you are worried by 30 ft. If you are diving air and going by boat, your tanks are lugged for you. Entry and exit from the boat is simple. Are the...

What are your thoughts on that "New material (that) steals oxygen from air"

To the OP: You are probably correct in saying that a new "device" would have to be developed and carried by a diver. But so what? Why be so dismissive and negative about a brand new discovery? I would think every diver should be ecstatic about the possibilities. Are the details known? No, but...

Belize vs. Dominica vs. St Kitts/Nevis

I've only done Belize via liveaboard, but some of the dive sites were absolutely awesome! Two or three were among the most beautiful I have been at in the Caribbean. I don't remember the names, but they were in the Belize National Marine Park system and I believe they are accessible from some of...

Advice for older divers in Bonaire

Will everyone wanting to do boat dives never do a shore dive on the house reef? That is really too bad, IMHO. At Sand Dollar, the DF op enables gear to be trundled in wagons to a gear-up site above the beach which is a short set of stairs below. There are hand rails for the stairs. If that is...

    Salt Pier Question

I've seen one such complication in which workers were making repairs to the conveyor system that goes overhead to the end of the pier. in that case, there were signs indicating that diving was closed beneath the pier. I believe the workers were being cautious about potential damage from falling...

    Tank-less diving

There is an old thread on the topic of diving without tanks, getting oxygen directly from the water. Here is a new twist suggesting that there is a new reality to the proposition. An oxygen absorbing/releasing material has apparently been invented. Mods -- merge with original thread, if...

    Bonaire Flights

It is less expensive to fly Delta to Atlanta on a Friday and stay at an inexpensive airport hotel, then fly to Bonaire Sat. AM, than to take an early Sat. AM flight from somewhere else before getting on the Bonaire direct flight from ATL the same morning.

    Mantas recently?

They are not common on Bonaire. However, they are occasionally present and more so in some years than others. Last January, there were a number present at several locations around Bonaire. I, along with numerous other folks, saw one along the cliff frontage at Sand Dollar. It (or others) had...

    SCUBA Club Cozumel

IMHO, the Keys shallow dives at about 35 ft are a better place for a newbie 10 yr old than in the currents of Cozumel, regardless of where one stays.

    Cayman Airways carry-on baggage policy

This is good to know. The problem for us is not the clothes, it is the stuff, like cameras, etc., that need to be carried on. We use an LL Bean rolling duffel for clothes. It only weighs a bit more than 8 lbs. That is over 41 lbs of clothes! We never carry close to that, but run close to 50 lbs...

    Cayman Airways carry-on baggage policy

We are going through the same process right now. We usually take a 50 lb rolling duffel containing two sets of the bulky dive gear, a second rolling duffel @ 30-35 lbs clothing for two, with regulators cameras etc spread into two carry-on suitcases. The problem now is that the empty carry-ons...
