    Anyone stayed at Den Lamen?

I am on Bonaire now and have never been a defender of Andre. However, from what I can tell from various posts here and elsewhere, >90% of the distaste for Andre's behavior stems from the widely known fact that he does not want divers using his facilities unless they are paying for his services...

What I recently saw in Bonaire was shocking...

Better a mask on the head, than left on the shore, as a DM/guide did when escorting us on a night dive at Salt Pier a few years ago. We surface swam to the end of the pier and that is when he discovered his error. Jerk.

    Another Bonaire question

To the OP: Bonaire is definitely not a good place for things it does not have. You listed your preferences, but as you realize, for the most part they are not available on Bonaire. If you are going, I suggest you change your wish list to include opportunities that Bonaire can provide. Those...

    Did I ruin my mask?

Don't use powdered detergent, if you use the dishwasher. It will put tiny pits in the glass. I recommend bleach to kill everything really dead. The dishwasher may not do so. My wife had a mold problem with her mask several years ago. It has custom, thick lenses with several narrow spaces...

Air travel from Chicago to Bonaire

You can go to Bonaire via United to Newark or Houston, then on to Bonaire relatively cheaply. Note the emphasis on 'relatively.' A quick check for an Oct. 10 departure with same day arrival found a flight via Houston for $811. This appears to be a bit better than the Delta cost.

So we're normalizing relations with Cuba

Americans have been able to go to Cuba easily, but illegally for quite a while. We met a nice middle class older couple about 5 yrs ago who had just returned from Cuba. They lived in Arizona and had flown to Mexico City, then on to Havana. Maybe US intelligence knew, or maybe not. I have met...

How to remove lenses that are glued into the mask??

Soak in acetone, if glued on with superglue. Test acetone first on some innocuous place. I imagine soaking might take awhile, as the acetone must dissolve glue from outside in.

Good place for both beginners and non-divers?

I would not rule out Bonaire. Yes, your men-folk may be newbies and feel reluctant to dive the wild side without a guide. That is a justifiable worry. But, there is a quick learning curve. If you stay in an oceanside resort, there is likely to be a decent house reef that can be dived north and...

    Best fins for frog kicking

My stiff red and black ones work well; so do my wife's floppy blue and black ones.

Article/More than 8,000 cases of chikungunya reported in Curacao

The following concerns Bonaire and is from a document called "Report Chikungunya Dutch Caribean week 45, 2014.pdf" dated Nov. 3, 2014. This document can be found HERE. It covers the period from Jan. 1, 2013, to Nov. 3, 2014. Another document from the World Health Organization and Pan American...

Article/More than 8,000 cases of chikungunya reported in Curacao

Rather amazing, if true. The supposed first case in Curacao was not until roughly July, 2014. Over diagnosis perhaps? Especially considering that most of the time since the first report consisted of dry season.

    Is it worth it?

Not what I would do, but what I did. Family beach vacation in Cancun. Took myself, wife and a daughter to Playa del Carmen for 2 tanks of diving on 1 day with our own gear schlepped from the NYC area. Dove mid week; everything dried fully before the return. Yes, the extra gear bag (for 2 people)...

    Wear Crocs

Thanks for the link to the police blotter. I missed that info because it is in Dutch. Here is a Google translated update: 05-11-2014 Arrests in Case MAKAHA PDF Print BONAIRE - On Tuesday, November 4th occurred around 4:00 pm a shooting incident in the district Mampariakutu at house number 19...

    Wear Crocs

Would you please provide a link to this information. I did a cursory search about the murder report in a number of locations and found nothing, at least during the past 10 days. The Bonaire Reporter came out today and had no mention of it.

Looking for spots with big schools of fish

Large schools of fish? Do you mean like this? The school consists of bigeye scad. There were roughly 1000-2000 in the school. We saw about 6-10 schools from the boat that day. These fish were seen on Bonaire. We have encountered large baitball schools 3 times in about 20+ trips. Bigeye scad and...

Which Dutch Island Do You Prefer To Dive In?

Different strokes and all that.....Bonaire over Curacao because of the ease with which one can get around and negotiate the dive sites. And, having been to quite a few places in the Caribbean, there is ample variety for suit my needs, especially in the observable fish species. Having spoken to...

    Thinking of Going to Bonaire!

The Sand Dollar beach is nice, but small, and sandwiched between the BDA dock to the south and a cement platform on rocks to the north. About 40 yds +/- long. It is easily accessible from the shore and has chaises provided by Sand Dollar. Here are some photos taken by folks who posted them on...

@creative minds! Component from aviation useful for scuba diving?

This. My wife and I use commercially available collapsible canes (segmented, with bungee cord down the middle) for exiting/entering shore dives. Two problems have emerged. The handle of one cane detached on entering one dive when I was forced to lean on it suddenly. There is a need to...
