Why is a Jacket BC better than a BP/W?

I think your comments exactly prove the point regarding one major reason why the vast majority of divers have no interest in BP/W and will never have. They do not want to take the time or responsibility of adding pockets; they want to purchase a BCD off the shelf with pockets. You hate pockets...

    Trip Report August 9-16

FWIW, we've been to Bonaire for about 30-35 days during each of the last 4 yrs, and for a week long visit during each of the previous 3 yrs. We are fish watchers. We have never seen a Nassau or black grouper on Bonaire. Tigers are fairly common. Spotted eagle rays are much more common than...

Why is a Jacket BC better than a BP/W?

Not a joke. That is one reason my wife likes her jacket BC---she likes the hug sensation, plus she can tell the amount of air in the BC just by the pressure of the "hug." I agree with the suggestion that the vast majority of divers who learn with a jacket BCD have zero wish to turn to something...

    Dive Vacations--Familiarity or Diversity????

My wife and I did not learn to dive until we were in our mid fifties, unfortunately. We then began to take dive trips to a number of spots around the Caribbean, including a Belize liveaboard. The sampling process included 3 trips to Bonaire and after the third, we decided that Bonaire could...

    Zhung Kong Robbed?

In the current Bonaire Reporter, there are three separate police actions described. One is the acquisition of three new deputies brought in for a limited period from Aruba. One is the granting of "extraordinary powers" to combat the armed robbers. The third is a vehicle stop and check program...

    Zhung Kong Robbed?

    1. The ratio of posts condemning the Bonaire crime situation to the number of reports must be on the order of 100 to 1. 2. The ratio of posts condemning the Bonaire crime situation to the number of verifiable reports must be more like 1000 to 1. 3. Some visitors, like me and many, many other...

How do you pack your gear for travel?

My wife and I share a rolling duffel for 2 suits, 2 BCDs, 2 fin sets, 2 booties and a few misc. things. Clothing goes in a second shared duffel. Regs, computers, camera, small lights go in a carry-on because it is more painful to arrive without them than the other items.

FINS, FINS, and more FINS!!! Help!

I dive Mares Superchannels that I bought for $40 new. I bought them because they are red. They work as well as anything I have ever used. Don't fret the decision. It is just not a big deal.

Diving Skills - North and South Sites

Current is not a problem at most sites most of the time. However, things change regularly. On Bari Reef, for example, often there is no or negligible current, but at times it is difficult and usually from the north, but sometimes from the south. You will always have to make a judgment call at...

    Senior shore diving Bonaire help

Jim--let us know how it goes. Just be careful to pre-determine whether the monopod can accept your full weight plus tank and weights, if you are going to depend on it. A cane does work wonders as a third leg of a tripod for stabilization, but as happened to me when my foot once slipped on a...

    Senior shore diving Bonaire help

I have a small camera (Canon G15) in a small case with no external strobes. On entry or exit, I clip it to a chest D-ring and to a retractor attached to another D-ring at hip height. These attachments keeps the entirety nicely cinched against my chest. It is a no-hands procedure and virtually...

    Medical form: practical/ethical quandary

I think the fundamental question is being ignored. Why should diving be different than any other activity that requires decent health to avoid a fatality? Medical questionnaires should not be required at all, IMHO. A driver's license does not require medical certification stating that the holder...

Looking for some advice on really easy diving fins?

Volos. Wife and daughter and friends use them. Speedier than my stiffer heavier Mares fins, but less effort.

Wifi Compared North of Town? (deco_martini returns in September!)

Sand Dollar is in the process of improving its WiFi. If you have been there within the past year, you are likely able to connect to the WiFi automatically. Access has been free for a while and the access codes have not change recently.

    Medical form: practical/ethical quandary

IMHO, there is too much obligatory dependence on the medical profession in our society. One good reason to participate in rough and tumble sports is to gain a more complete understanding of how your own body works and whether or not it is working correctly. You are your own best advocate because...

    Senior shore diving Bonaire help

The proverbial straw that broke my proverbial back occurred when returning from a dive and losing my balance (because of neurological leg prob. that does not bother me when swimming), falling into 6 inches of water about a foot from shore and turning turtle. The wave action, though minor...

    Senior shore diving Bonaire help

That was my post: My wife and I use them for all shore diving not from a dock. Highly recommended as a cane adds a third leg of stability. My wife's cane is collapsible aluminum, having a bungee cord down the middle, and is stored in a home-made nylon holster attached top and bottom to her BC...

ABC Islands - which is the best for diving?

I'm afraid I don't understand. Did you actually see anything of interest on Aruba that exceeded what is found on Bonaire? "Awesome diving experiences" are pretty much available on Bonaire, Curacao, Belize, as well as every other place I have been. I need more detail for your comment to be...

    Back to Bonaire in August

The old Green Parrot fronts the south end of the sea wall at Sand Dollar. At the north end of the rocks in front of the decaying platform is where the very nice stand (best on Bonaire that I know of) of elkhorn coral resides. South of the BDA dock by about 50 yds are are remnants of an old...

    Flights, Aruba to Bonaire

There is a rumor in the July 7-21 issue of the Bonaire Reporter that Insel may make up the loss of the direct Aruba-->Bonaire--Aruba flights formerly available with Tiara (Tiara has been forced into bankruptcy because over $40million due it by Venezuela has not been paid) by initiating a new...
