    Garrapata Dive, July 10

So people have expressed interest in the dive sites south of Lobos so here is my trip report from yesterday. The ocean forecast showed flat seas and little wind so my wife and I decided to try Waterfall Beach in Garrapata, about 4.5 miles south of the Point Lobos entrance (Monterey Dive...

Advice on Shore Dives South of Pt. Lobos North of Big Sur

I finally got around to describing Mal Paso on my website and have included an underwater topo map. No details of the bottom relief of the inside of the cove but out by the wash rocks looks pretty interesting. Monterey Dive Infomation- Mal Paso site Ben

Advice on Shore Dives South of Pt. Lobos North of Big Sur

I haven't walked the path Mal Paso in a few months so I'm not sure about the poison oak. but here's no reason to act like Tarzan; you can easily walk from your car to the beach. If you look on Google Maps, you can see the path between the houses on Yankee Pt Dr. at the top, wind around behind...

Advice on Shore Dives South of Pt. Lobos North of Big Sur

I will have to disagree with you. I have dived MM67 without a problem; but you can only dive it with good conditions. Yesterday I was hoping to get to Waterfall Beach but we stopped at Monastery because it did not look like the conditions we calm enough to head further south. And you have to...

You can probably talk to a few at the dive show (Bay Area Dive Show/ SCUBA SHOW / SCUBA DIVING SHOW) in 2 weeks. There looks to be a few who plan to attend. Ben

    Friday 3-19th diving....

We have been having primarily southern winds which has increased the upwelling. This will hopefully bring in clear (but cold) water. Below is a link showing this. MBARI - M1 Contour CTD string Metsys plot - last 30 days The upwelling will probably be more pronounced in Carmel Bay. Ben

    shale island

We have Ocean Kayak Prowler 15s (old style). The new ones are lightly longer, wider, and heavier. I would probably go with the Prowler 13 now since they are a little smaller (easier to handle out of the water). The guy who runs Adventure Sports swears by smaller kayaks (11') since they are...

    Anyone free this weekend?

I while back while getting ready for a dive, I heard a woman, after walking back from reading the sign, start talking to her partner about their abilities and if they should dive there (they were with a large group and it was a nice day). So the signs do work and make some people think about...

    shale island

Yes, my wife and I dive extensevly out of kayaks and use BW as a base for some of the dives. Kayaks open many dive sites to us which are too far (for some) to swim to. They are they are much lower cost than a full size boat, easier to store, and have other uses (paddle Elkhorn Slough when the...

    Interpreting Coastal Forecasts

Water temp (and indirectly clarity) can vary with the wind direction. This web site shows the temp vs wind effect. MBARI - M1 Contour CTD string Metsys plot - last 30 days The wind (when blowing in the right direction) causes upwelling, bringing up cold water laden with nutrients which...

    DM candidate equipment

I have heard that the dive shops require DMs to use the equipment that the shop sells. How many DMs have been required to buy/use the equipment that the shop carries? I have toyed with the idea of becoming a DM. I currently use a BP&W but have a vest-style BC I’m thinking of selling. But I...

    Northern California fish etc book

The first book I grab for fish is Gotshall but this summer I found a nice all purpose book titled "Marine Life of the Pacific Northwest" by Bernard Hanby. It covers everything from plants , anemones, worms, shrimp, crabs, nudibranches, and fish. Highly recomended but pricey. Ben

Need a buddy for this weekend, 10/10, 10/11

Here is a link to a company that makes beach wheels: Wheeleez, Inc. Years ago I made a cart to roll my Hobicat with them; they worked great. Monterey Bay Kayaks (close to Wharf 2) has a beach wheelchair that is available to the public (provided by State Parks). I don't know if they would...

Coastal Cleanup Day September 19, 2009

The cleanup dive was organized by Northern California Underwater Photographic Society and no, it wasn't widely publicized. One person other than club members dove with us; he was there waiting to other divers he expected to show up for the cleanup. We dove the beach side; I'm not sure the...
