Diving in Brazil: advice needed for Arraial do Cabo

Definitely avoid the major events. Flights and hotel costs during the Olympics and the World Cup have exploded already. If you Google the phrase: arraial do cabo mergulho this will bring up all the sites of the operators in Arraial. When we travel as a group from São Paulo we generally book...

    2 octopus in one day.

The standard plural in English of octopus is octopuses. However, the word octopus comes from Greek and the Greek plural form octopodes is still occasionally used. The plural form octopi, formed according to rules for some Latin plurals, is incorrect. octopus: definition of octopus in Oxford...

Wristify - Diving application? Reduce thermal protection requirements?

I certainly wouldn't expect to eliminate neoprene altogether but if I could drop from my 7mm to a 3mm (still with hood and gloves) that would be a huge increase in comfort level and sense of freedom and my lower back would certainly appreciate the weighting reduction.

Wristify - Diving application? Reduce thermal protection requirements?

My dream is to be able to dive even cold water with a minimum of thermal protection - and consequently a minimum of weighting. Reading about this Wristify device developed by four MIT engineering students who developed a thermo-electric bracelet that monitors air and skin temperature, and sends...

    Regulator and LDS issues

It comes down to personal choice and ease to get service after. Both reg sets have similar performance & quality. At the beginning of this year I changed my primary reg set from Aqualung to a Mk17/C300. Two things I don't like about the Mk17/C300; although breathing is very good mine is noisy...

    Anti-fog formulae

For me (as a Brit) there is a very true article on Divernet: Mask-cleaner Frog Spit - Divernet "SOMEONE CLEVERER THAN ME once said that the British and the Americans were two peoples separated by one language. In fact there are lots of cultural differences between us that can, in many...

How bad is washing a wetsuit in a washing machine?

I'm also sure it was the dryer that damaged the suit. As for the washing machine, I'd say you'd be ok with a front loader that has a gentle tumbling action - cool wash, but would definitely stay away from a traditional top-loader with a central agitator. Yes, it's bad to dry it in the sun...

    Divers impacting aquatic mammals

It may not be popular but all the dictionaries accept it: OED Pronunciation: /ˈɪmpakt/ 1the action of one object coming forcibly into contact with another:there was the sound of a third impact[mass noun]:bullets which expand and cause devastating injury on impact 2a marked...

My tank nearly slid off my BCD yesterday. What would you do?

It happened to me and my wife a couple of times each over 400 dives. I know how to tighten a cam-band but sometimes the tank is really slimy and I just couldn't get enough grip. So last year I picked up from my LDS a couple of used ScubaPro cam bands, the ones with the metal clips, and replaced...

    Anyone ever dove drunk... ?!?

Nothing unusual about a big cooler full of beer on the boat to drink on the run back AFTER the last dive. I go on many boats where this is the norm.

    Anyone ever dove drunk... ?!?

Well I do know a certain group of divers who, when going for a night out, would put their dive bags in the trunk of their cars so they could go directly from the club to the dive boat at 07:30AM without wasting any time and then nap on the way out to the dive site..... Oh to be young again.

Hydrating effects of different types of drinking water?

My first reaction was that this sounded like an urban myth. So I did a little research with Google and I was quite surprised just how many opinions are out there, many by apparently qualified people who say they are writing from clinical experience. One example: THE WONDERS OF WATER So I'll be...

Is my dive computer starting to die?

Might just be a bad contact while downloading. This could explain the garbage. I've seen this occasionally (I have 2 Vypers). Tell the SDM to ignore it then clean the contacts and re-run the transfer.

    Dive Shop Etiquette

I use multiple shops for both equipment and trips. Not all my local dive shops will be running their trips to the same destination on a particular long holiday weekend - so the destination normally determines the choice even though I do have some preference as to which group I will travel with...

    travelling with dive lights

This issue of loose or installed is regularly an issue. After being detected on the scanner I have often been asked to demonstrate that the light is actually a dive light and doesn't have something else inside, ie I have to turn it on. So what I've done is prepare plastic discs that I leave...

Cruel angler 'rides' a Mola Mola - needs to be named and shamed

When I first read about this event and saw the clip my first reaction was outrage. But after reading various reports and one of the interviews, the key point that came across was that the fish could easily have swum off after the first contact but in actual fact came back 4 times for more and...

Is my computer / watch at risk?

All single point attachment bands fail eventually and they'll fail when you're most occupied and don't notice. Like trying to climb a boat ladder when it's heaving up and down.

What do most consider Cold Water Diving?

Anything below 20C/68F would need a very good reason to dive.
