Be very careful of the Chinese dive lights on ebay.

I have to disagree with the use of the word "most". I bought 4 different types and was able to strip them all down completely and easily. On those that use an external circular ring with a magnet the internal sensor assembly generally has one blob of silicone to hold it at the correct...

Be very careful of the Chinese dive lights on ebay.

+1 I have bought various types of cheap lights (all <30USD) direct from China (site DX) and practically all were good designs flawed by poor assembly. I learned very quickly that a complete dis-assembly, inspection and careful re-assembly with lubrication worked wonders. It's common to find...

How many would consider using a tether when diving with a loved one?

My wife uses a Maverick and the velcro retaining the 2 front pouches became almost useless after about 400 dives. I simply added two bungee loops (short length of bungee sewed and epoxied to make an overlapping joint) that go through the pouch limiters, around the outside of the pocket and hook...

How many would consider using a tether when diving with a loved one?

In my cummerbund pocket I always carry a coiled 6ft length of 1/4" bungee with a loop tied at each end just big enough to put a hand through (no cutting instrument required). It's always there and we've used it maybe 15 times over the last 500 dives but it's come in very useful at times. Some...

Swimming with sharks is safer than taking selfies

A report recently published shows that in 2015 more people died taking selfies than in shark attacks! There have been twelve recorded selfie deaths in 2015 so far, compared to eight people dying because of shark attacks. More people have died by taking selfies this year than by shark attacks -...

    Computer issue or DM issue?

It's stated somewhere in the documentation that the real time calculation is based on continuous calculation whereas the subsequent PC calculation depends on the stored samples at whatever rate you specified. So yes, there will be differences in the resulting calculation especially during...

What do you do with keys while shore diving on Bonaire?

By circumventing the anti-theft device you are cancelling your insurance policy. If the vehicle is stolen the insurance company on Bonaire will ask you for the key and the security device (fob) as evidence that you didn't leave them in the vehicle and make life easy for the robber. This is...

    Sign to protect coral reef!

Not exactly a very informative post. When I'm asked to sign a petition I like to know what I'm defending. I did a little reading on the topic and there are arguments for and against and a lot of other issues to take into account. One of the most interesting sites I saw was...

Going from spring straps back to rubber on jet fins, need hardware

Stretching out spring straps that are too short should not be a great problem. Just keep stretching the spring and relax it alternately in small increments (1/4" extra each pull) until you reach the elastic limit.

    tizip problems at docking end?

    Reg freeze, accidents and procedures

For last resort situations I was taught to take the BFK strapped to my leg and cut the SPG HP hose and breathe off that. The pinhole in the HP fitting at the 1st stage regulates the flow. If you intend to cut the the LP hose kink it first before the cut so you can regulate the flow. PS, you...

Are there any wildlife that actually want to harm us?

About 10 years ago my wife and I had a bad experience in North-east Brazil with a very aggressive Remora (sucker fish). http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/marine-life-and-ecosystems/83714-aggressive-remora-post915606.html#post915606 About 8 years ago my son was head-butted on his thigh by a...

Regulator Cousteau & Impulse Cryo servicing

Well I can comment on the first stage. In our family we have 3 reg sets with Cousteau 1st stages (and Micra Adj 2nd stages), they're in regular use and no problems at all to get service or parts.

Can Suuntos be adjusted to not be as conservative?

My wife and I have been diving Suunto Vypers for may years now and generally we're very satisfied with the profiles. Before moving to the Suuntos we used a more aggressive brand and my wife was getting occasional skin bends. After the change this never again happened. The only negative point...

How old is too old to get certified?

Well I was working on a shore-end survey for a submarine cable back in 1975 in Venezuela and we had contracted a local diving team. When we started operations it seemed to be 2 divers plus a fairly old boat driver, mid 80s. The 2 younger ones did the shallower dives but to my surprise when we...

Has anyone ever used a mask mounted light?

Mine sits in my junk box. First time I tried to use it there were a lot of small critters in the water and the light attracted all of them. I had a cloud in front of my mask and another few hundred burrowing under my hood, into my hair, ears and down my neck. Probably the most nauseating...

Question Panic in the experienced diver?

You may be wrong. I went through a similar situation. I (in my 60s) was diving with my son (very fit in his 20s, qualified instructor) and we surfaced into a strong current that was pulling us away from the boat. After a couple of minutes fighting the current it was clear I was not going to make...

    Diving in current

One of the advantages of carrying a BFK is that you can stick it in the sand when you need to rest without losing ground. If you have 2 of them you can actually pull yourself along hand over hand as you would when using ice tools. :D
