    spare air

Club boat's booked up on "other duties" over the last weekend. Don't know that anyone would want to come out on the Troy D again, we've given it a bit of a flogging of late. TBH, I'll certainly give it a go but I'd be keener to get back on the Phoques too. Caves & seals and GWS to try out my big...

    Scuba-L Cratos(Orion) Back-inflate BCD

Excellent review. I have been interested in these for a while but others, suspicious of the price have been a bit cynical. I was interested in the Cratos over the Orion, (mainly I preferred the colour scheme, pathetic I know). Would you recommend the Orion over the Cratos - I'm thinking of the...

Hi Roh. Yes, I'm a bugger for that, I have to admit :coffee:. Any news on your itinerary yet? Might be up for a dive to TroyD & Isles de Phoques (with Island Divers) if you fancy it. Water was a balmy 17C and 20M vis at Lagoon Bay Kelp Forest this w/e.

OK, cards on the table. 1. I have not undertaken DIR/GUE/Technical/Whatever training. 2. My original recreational training was back in the early 80s, I qualified through BSAC. I dived on and off and then emigrated to Australia in 1987, and subsequentlly had a lay-off from diving until the late...

    spare air

Works for me "Dude", (I hate that word), although I will admit that I don't much like that bloody great knot on the end of the handle, and in truth it's not really needed as the line is turned at least three times around the hose clamp and then trapped under it when tightened.

FWIW, I did a CESA from 29M (+/- 100ft) in Hodge Close, a slate quarry in the UK. This was 25 yrs and I was too young and too dumb to be too worried by this at the time. It worked fine though, just like the dive manual and the laws of physics said it would As for the perils of OOA and buddy...

    spare air

I'd concur with everything EvaL has to say on this. I looked (and that's all I did) at the infamous SpareAir about 10 yrs ago and came to the conclusion that it is a waste of time. 3 cu ft? Working moderately hard at the surface, you can put away 1 cu ft per minute; now go to say 15-20M under...

I'll be diving up there next on the Queens Birthday Long Weekend (June, whenever)

    when spring straps break ...

Yeah, the jets have a slightly different buckle arrangement to the Mares, Cressi, Aqualung etc fins. With the latter types, you don't need to damage the buckles/straps, you just click them off holus bolus.

    Cressi Sub Big Eyes?

Easy way round that; simply roll the hood down, fit mask & strap, roll hood back up and over the strap. Much more secure and if you get kicked in the face, the mask may be dislodged but you are highly unlikely to lose it. In the meantime, mask is on much more securely, no leaks, no dramas. Been...

    Cressi Sub Big Eyes?

Best mask I've ever used/owned. Thoroughly recommend it, field of vision, particularly downwards, is unparalleled.

Mares Volo Fins ... any good?

The original Volos were very floppy, the newer Volo powers are a lot stiffer. Similarly, the older verisions had a breakage at the hinge problem; my understanding is that this has now been fixed. On max speed, they fell just a little short of the Apollo Biofin in this test...

Mares Volo Fins ... any good?

No arguments there, but when I need to zoom around like a zoomything, I have that option, such as some of the sites here are very surgey and you have to fin like buggery just to stay in one spot. Bit like having a Porsche really, 95% of the time, you're driving at 50mph but just occasionally....

    when spring straps break ...

Couldn't he just drop his weights? Still, if the guy was found dead, you'll never know the ins & outs. Onm the subject of Spring Straps, I make my own version - Bungee Straps (don't know if they call it the same in the US, but bungee is simply round-secttion elasticated rope). They are...

    Tasmania and Bicheno

Derby is within striking distance (a bit over an hour) from St Helens, speak to Peter Paulsen at Bay of Fires Dive Centre, he operates a modified Haines Hunter, has air, gear for hire, takes 5 or 6 divers I think. There's some pretty good sites out that way. It's all rocky granite bottom, with a...

Mares Volo Fins ... any good?

I've had a pair since SEptember. They are brilliant. It feels as though you aren't wearing anything, except you are zooming around like a....zooming thing. If your Missus has bought you a pair, give them a try, you can always replace em. No cramps either.

    Tasmania and Bicheno

It certainly was; my most memorable dive in 25 years and I maxed at 18M! The site is the Isle de Phoques, named by the early French explorer, Bruny D'Entrecastaux in the early 1790's, translated, it means Island of Seals (no sh_t Sherlock!!). It's located off the East Coast of Tasmania (off...
