How did Santa treat you for Christmas?

I bought myself a twin set of HP100s. After years of wanting too, I will finally get to dive doubles! My wife also blew up and framed three photos she had taken of fish and jellyfish and the Monterey Bay aquarium. Very cool! I also got Diving into Darkness. A very good book indeed.

    Diabetic Diving

Hi JD, I've been Type 1 diabetic since 2003, and have done about 150 dives since then, down to recreational limits and beyond. I use basal insulin, rather than an insulin pump, so the night before a dive, I cut my basal insulin injection in half. I once ran into a Type 1 diabetic who was...

"Rebreathers Simplified" by Dr. Mel Clark

I'm sorry, I must have missed it. What is the cost of the book? Thanks, -Todd.

What basic bits & bobs to buy?

For the dive bag, get a cheap mesh bag that can get wet. Space on a boat is limited, so it's always a good idea to have your stuff be as compact as possible.

    Question about Nitrogen Narcosis

You have a good question, and it sounds like you are approaching it cautiously. First the obvious disclaimer. As a new diver, don't be in a rush to go deep. In deeper diving, your air supply goes much faster, you have to be more aware of your surroundings, more careful with ascent, etc. You...

    Jotron AQ4 Strobe

I've carried a Princeton Tec Aquastrobe for several years, but with one AA battery, the thing has always felt like a toy. I finally purchased a Jotron AQ4 strobe this week. This strobe is powered by 1 C battery, and is significantly brighter than the Aquastrobe. The size is about that of an...

    Regulator Freeze-up At Monterey (CA)

I agree with Gombessa across the board. Most of the times, Monterey is 53-55F.

    Steel vs Aluminum Tanks

Like Spectrum says, if you are diving cold water, and can afford them, steel is the best way to go. You will save overall weight, and reduce the amount of weight that you carry on your belt.

    Diabetes and Diving

I became Type 1 diabetic in 2003, after already having about 80 dives. I stayed away from diving for about the first year, until seeing some threads on Scubaboard from other diabetics describing how they manage diabetes and diving. I really have to credit those threads for changing my...

    Kelp diving

I like diving in kelp, I always think of it like walking through a forest. Here's my input: -Be relaxed and swim slowly. Staying on the edge of a kelp bed might be a good way to get a further introduction. -If you get caught up on something, and eventually you will, slowly move your arm...

    mola mola (sun fish)

A year ago I saw a juvenille in about 50' of water right outside Monterey harbor, at the wreck of the barge.

    Best Sandals for Diving

My wife and I spent our honeymoon at Sandals in St. Lucia in 2000. I got a couple of dives in (prior to being certified). As I recall, it was nice, with plenty of fish, though at the time I had nothing to compare too! :)

    Magazine???

I see you live in Canada. The Canadian Diver magazine isn't too bad: Divermag, though I have trouble finding it. In the US, the big ones are Rodale's Scuba Diving and PADI's Scuba Diver magazine. I frankly think that after about 1-2 years in the sport, these magazines get terribly repetative...

    Feedback on new equipment purchase

Hi wmcyow, Congrats on getting cert'ed and welcome to the world of diving. The one piece of advice that I'll give you is unless you are getting an insanely great deal from the diveshop, there's not much reason to run out and drop $2400 in one shot on gear. Rent your gear for a while, get a...

Dive suggestions for Monterey, CA area

For guided shore dives, I've had very good luck with Bamboo Reef divers in Monterey. If your new to the area, a guided dive is a great way to get an introduction to the area. I've done several shore dives in Monterey, though to be honest, I far prefer the boat diving. If the plankton is...

Equipment to take on a non-hardcore scuba vacation/holiday

Mask, compass and computer at a minimum. Maybe her too. :)

I wonder if anyone can give me some advice!

I think just keep calm when you are doing it. Having cold water surrounding your face with the mask off is definitely a foreign feeling, and it take a little time to adapt. It might help to review a mental checklist prior to pulling the mask off, when you aren't stressed, and part of the...

    Scubapro Jets or Aqualung rocket

I have the Rockets due to being in between the Jets XL & XXL sizes. They are very stiff, but I've never dove the Jets, so can't compare. My guess based on the popularity of the Jets is that the Jets are a better fin.
