I was going to suggest you talk to Tobin also. He makes some really nice stuff.
To be perfectly honest, there's no chance at all I would ever buy anything Halcyon. I just think their stuff is way overpriced.
Lets start here: There are a lot of companies out there making backplates. Why have you narrowed it down to those two? Are there specific features they have that you're looking for? Do you want to be the guy on the boat with the most expensive backplate?
Just like any course anywhere else, if you have a good instructor you'll have a good course.
The main purpose of the pool sessions is to give you a place to learn the basics (mask clearing, regulator clearing, etc) in a controlled environment and at a depth (a few feet) where if you freak...
What's your idea of affordable for the wing?
As for the harness, that's really up to you. The system I use (which is more of a hybrid than a true BP/W) has some minimal padding on the shoulders. I like that because I do spend a lot of time out of the water with it on. I don't like the hog...
Well, the main reason I don't have any problems with this is I am yet to wear a weight belt. I'm a sinker, I rarely wear a wetsuit, and when I do, I just switch to my SS backplate and that's enough weight to get me down.
But if I did wear a weight belt, I can't imagine any situation I'd ever...
Just to clarify, the BC's with cumberbuns I have also have buckling waist straps that go over them.
I've never had any problems with my crotch strap. Well, except when I forget to undo it during rescue classes. For some reason people aren't big fans of having to undo my crotch strap. :D
Wow, that could be about a ten page post.
I will say this. I do not, will not, and have not ever sold gear, so I really have no vested interest in what they choose to do. I honestly couldn't care less what they choose to use. Well, as long as their choice isn't to use a trashbag filled...
Have you read all these threads? How about the one where the OP specifically says he wants a jacket style and someone comes in saying he should get a BP/W?
No, clearly they shouldn't. But I shouldn't be, nor am I, censored for saying that the BP/W is not, in fact, the greatest thing to...
I'm not saying that at all. What I'm saying is I'm sick and tired of every single thread about a BC having at least one person claiming the BP/W is the only way to go.
Every single student I teach gets to see a BP/W setup, as well as a hybrid, as well as jackets. Overwhelmingly they choose...
I have, for my classes, BCs with and without cumberbunds. I've found that, generally speaking, people with a few extra pounds on them tend to complain about waist straps cutting in on them. To be honest, I've never had this problem with or without cumberbunds as I don't have any extra pounds...
Just recently I was demonstrating entries for a class. I was being lazy and didn't feel like sitting all the way down on the edge of the pool so I had this really bright idea to use this bench by the pool to show everyone the starting position for the old backwards roll. It really seemed like...
Wait, losing one hose doesn't make you streamlined but eliminating a couple of clips does?
And, if cumberbunds are so dumb, why have BCs had them for so long? Someone must think they're a good idea. Some people think a cumberbund makes the BC a little more comfortable...
I saw that, as well as some other good deals on back inflation BCs. But since the OP specifically mentioned he liked the feel of a jacket style BC, I figured a back inflate wasn't going to tickle his fancy.
