Are divers seeing more cobia since Hurricane Richard?

Funny you should ask. I was diving off San Pedro on Ambergris (with "Chuck and Robbies" -- great operation by the way) the first week of November and we had an Eagle Ray swoop by along one of the sandy fingers. In formation immediately above it was a strange looking fish -- kind of a cross...

    Pirate Latitudes

I'll second that recommendation. Great book to read on your way to/from your favorite Caribbean destination. Eastern, Lesser Antilles setting with every pirate adventure cliche' dutifully and competently included. Enjoy it - it's fun, no-brainer fiction!!!

Ever taken your non-diving spouse on a liveaboard?

Yup - I'd second the Aquacat. I took my ND Spouse on that itinerary 3 years ago and she loved it. Lots of land/beach/snorkling/kayaking options (mostly in the afternoon). Crew was very accommodating. Aquacat is as nice as anything afloat and the rooms are relatively large with big windows. If...

    What happened to Thanks?

Yeah - that's always the way I saw it. More efficient to just add a "Thanks" (when the occasion warranted) rather than generate a separate posting. I never imagined that something as innocuous as that (the button) could become an mechanism for abusive, ulterior motives.

    Grand, Little, or Brac?

Just got back from 2 weeks (Sep. 12-26) in Brac. Since we were there for more than a week, we rented a house. That said, if I were going to Brac for JUST a week, the Brac Reef Beach resort is the only way to go. There are no other dive ops on the island -- except for private charters. And the...

trip report, caribbean explorer ll, saba and st kitts

I was there from 11/14-11/21, 2009. Air temps were 85 deg. Just rained one afternoon -- but hard! Water temps on dives varied from 81-85 deg. No particular pattern. All 3 locations (Saba, Statia, St.Kitts) had dives across that range. The afternoon shore excursions are worth considering. St...

trip report, caribbean explorer ll, saba and st kitts

I, too, knew nothing of the "rubber chicken" until I had it hung on me early in the week on a Bahamas Liveaboard. Figured I was "IT" and happily assumed the obligation of tagging the next "victim". Well, there was one guy (always is) who was big, loud and knew everything about everything -- kind...

trip report, caribbean explorer ll, saba and st kitts

Thanks for the report. I dove the same itinerary last year in November and it's exactly as you described. Diamond Rock (and Saba) were the highlights for me as well. I don't think you missed anything in Statia. A local guide was required to accompany us on our one day of diving there - a surly...

    Trip Report: Brac Reef Resort

I stayed at Brac Beach Resort in 2006 and 2008 (just before Paloma). Your description of the property and operation is dead on. The rooms were clean, but basic. The ones on the west and north sides have no ocean views. The buffet format is nicely presented, tasty, abundant, and varied. The...

    Nekton boats may come back!!

I'd also vote for sailing from a Florida port and focusing on the southern Bahamas. I did the Medio Reef / Cay Sal itinerary in 2009. Nekton related issues aside, those were great areas for diving. With a refurbished vessel, I believe you'd do quite well, especially since your competition is...

    Nekton (Bad News)

Cheaper and easier for you as well, but still no walk in the park. If an arbitration clause is in your contract, you must go that route. And the decision of the Arbitration Panel or Arbitrator is final. It cannot be reviewed or overturned by the legal system unless there has been gross...

Liveaboard - Aqua Cat vs. Explorer

Been on all three operations. Aggressor -- 5 years ago (in Bay Islands), Aquacat -- 2 years ago in Exumas, Explorer -- last month on the San Salvador itinerary. In general, I'd put Aggressor in the middle as far as overall quality of food, drink and accommodations. Aquacat is definitely a...

    Dive Light Battery Explosion

I might add that any time you open up a flashlight that you suspect is contaminated by salt water - DO NOT LOOK AT THE FLASHLIGHT while you are opening it. When/if the nasty liquid contents come popping out under pressure the caustic spray isn't anything you want to get into your eyes or on your...

WARNING! Dont use mask rinse buckets!!

Let's see here. Quick scenario. Diver "A" spits in mask and rinses in 1-Gallon bucket. Diver "B" dips mask in afterwards. You don't see any problem there? In our case the sick diver was a fountain of mucus. His mask was unavoidably infested.

Explorer Liveaboard - Saba, St Kitts, St Martin

Yup. Me and the non-diving, but aggressively snorkling spouse went last November. Flew into St. Maarten, got aboard and woke up next morning in Saba waters. Saba was the best diving -- pinnacles like Diamond rock were unique and fun. We were there for 3 days. Next day was Statia where at...

    Cuan Law?

Actually, there has been some negative feedback on that vessel: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/cruises-liveaboards-charter-boats/254106-cuan-law-cancellation-forewarned-when-you-book.html [/URL] I almost booked with them 2 years ago and when I gently inquired if my non-diving spouse would be...

    Nekton (Bad News)

I'm already signed up for the June 12 Bahamas cruise -- my second Explorer trip. I sailed with Nekton last May and decided never to darken their gangplank again back then. Class act, Explorer. Now THAT'S how to run a liveaboard company!!!

    Bonaire Water Temps

Dove there 2 weeks ago. 16 dives: North, south, and points between. 82 degrees.

    Bonaire handrails

Funny you should mention it. I tried to book TIR for the same week -- and they were FULL! That's how I ended up in Bonaire instead. It's still on my short list. And I AM a big Liveaboard fan as well.
