DIR: God's gift to diving or Hell spawn?

Boy, I had to go back and read everything I said cuz it's been so long. Yup, I stand by everything I said in this thread. BTW, I don't have an ax to grind with those who dive deep air. I do have an ax to grind with agencies, instructors, and those "leaders" in the industry who promote...

    Considering BP/wings setup...

Hmmm... yeah, I fell for them..........once. :) Mike

equipmnt for my children, long, but please help.

I like the STA for it's stability of the tank. Leverage isn't an issue, IMO. No biggie at all, but it does add a bit of cost which may need to be considered. Mike

    zeagle and apeks

The TX50 seconds and the TX100 seconds are virtually identical inside. I don't see the TX100 first as being superior to the DS4 in any way other than hose routing for doubles (and that's only minute at best). The DS4 is cheaper and has all standard 3/8" ports, so it has it's points too. Mike

equipmnt for my children, long, but please help.

I think if you did a Fred T plate and harness kit, 27lb Halcyon wing, Apeks regs from DiveInn, and a shorty wetsuit, you can come in under $1000 per person. Mike

equipmnt for my children, long, but please help.

They will never outgrow a simple harness/wing combo as offered by Halcyon, and the harness is anotomically correct for them too. My wife had me put neon green webbing on hers :). Mike

    What deco software?

I guess I phrased that kinda strangely. If V-Planner tells me that deep stops start at 70'+ or so, I'll stop at 70' with 50% for five minutes so I can start offgassing at a deeper depth. I prefer offgassing as soon as possible which is why I opt for 50% rather than 02 most of the time...

Nice report Chris. Glad you weren't as PO'ed as I was right after the class :D. Take care, Mike

About FredT backplates & are they compatible with Halcyon?

Sounds like marketing rhetoric to me. I got my wife a Fred T plate and used it with a 36lb Pioneer wing and STA. Another person I dive with uses a Fred T plate and Explorer wing with doubles. His plates work just fine with Halcyon wings. Mike

Transpac or Diverite BP/Wing for newbie?

My wife just got certified in a Halcyon setup. It's not overkill for anything. If you have to go cheap, get a Fred T plate and webbing kit and Halcyon wing. The wing is the truly important part. Mike

    zeagle and apeks

If you need them for doubles, go with TX100's, but if you're looking at a single tank only, then you can't beat the TX50/DS4 for the price. The second stages are almost identical, and I can't tell the difference in breathing characteristics between the two. Good luck, Mike

    What deco software?

All of my standard dive profiles were cut using +2 conservation with 5mins minimum at gas changes (normally 70' using 50%). I use a 30FPM max ascent rate from depth, and a 10FPM max final ascent rate from 20' to the surface. V-Planner starts it's deep stops at about the right depth every time...

    Tech Dive Coputer

I use a Vyper on gauge mode and V-Planner. Once you know how deco works for you, you can figure it out in your sleep. It helps to use standard gasses and standard profiles. I agree with UP. Mike

    What deco software?

V-Planner has treated me very well for a couple years now. I use it to get an idea of what to do, then add in my own conservative factors into my plan. It's easy to use, it's profiles "look right", and it's cheap. Even on air dives, I come out feeling good. I recommend it. Mike

    Edmund Fitzgerald

Efforts are ongoing to prohibit diving on all wrecks in the Great Lakes (particularly in US waters) for the reasons being discussed. The whole Fitz thing just got it all started. The number of people who died on it is relatively small campared to many shipwrecks on the Great Lakes. Mike
