Why not SPG under the left arm to left Chest D ring?

Things get more complicated (obviously) if you're talking about tech diving. But for recreational diving, there's no real reason not to clip off your SPG at the location that works best for you. Kim wears a poodle jacket and tucks her SPG in her cummerbund. Sue wears a back inflate and clips...

Pony Tanks with instabuddy...Prudent or Paranoid?

I am under the impression that you cannot fly with the valve in place. I don't travel with tanks, so it's just an impression, not something I've rigorously researched. Is this impression incorrect, or are you just replacing the valve prior to heading to the shop to avoid the vis rule?

    Deco reg on a pony?

If you breathe regular air through a green reg, you will die. Almost as quickly as if you were wearing split fins. Seriously, the color doesn't matter. A lot of us use green to indicate high-octane mixes (I use it on anything higher than 50% O2). But it'll work just fine with anything you care...

The worst thing you have ever heard or seen...

Or perhaps I'm just disagreeing with the notion that it's remotely understandable why an instructor would do this to a student.

The worst thing you have ever heard or seen...

It was an Aeris Manta. Not terribly conservative. And I really think teaching a new diver that it's OK to ignore NDLs and go into even light deco is a terrible precedent.

The worst thing you have ever heard or seen...

Seen off Cozumel.... a guy in a Speedo peeing over the side of the boat.

    Question about learning deco procedures

As I understand it, the definition of a tech dive can be boiled down to 'any dive during which you cannot go straight (though slowly) to the surface' which means deco and rec diving are mutually exclusive.

The worst thing you have ever heard or seen...

Not much worse than a grossly overweight man with a hairy back wearing a banana hammock... A friend of mine showed me his computer after he finished his AOW dives. Because it was 'acting weird.' That would be because his last dive (keep in mind this was a training dive...) put him well into...

Diving equipment added or removed ? September 2018.

I changed the short hose on my side mount regs. It was a little too short. Do repairs count? I had to replace a grommet on my sidemount harness, plus the nut/bolt that went through it.

Drift diving is NOT so relaxing!

Bah. Nothing is always. The vast majority of the time, drift diving is calm, relaxing and wonderful.

    Anyone dive the Denver Aquarium?

There are lots of sharks, but it's difficult to call it a dive. You're required to be massively over weighted and sit on the bottom of a trench. If I were doing it (it's crazy expensive, for such a short dive) I'd do the regular reef tank.

Dive knives: Tester's choice or go cheapie?

I always hear about how it's inevitable that you'll lose your knife. It's weird. Because I bought a couple titanium knives ten years ago when I was first gearing up, and I've never lost one. I did lose a torch once, because the knot came loose. Got back and the boat and had just the clip left.

Dive knives: Tester's choice or go cheapie?

Interesting. OK. I doubt it'll change how I dive, but interesting none the less.

How many dive cylinders do you currently own ? [Poll]

Zero cylinders. Because there's really no diving in Colorado that's worth it, and it would be crazy to fly with cylinders rather than just rent them.

    Petrel 2 and Ubuntu 18.04

In the past, I have run Subsurface on my Linux boxes to keep my logs. I take my Surface Pro 3 running Ubuntu with me on trips and then make backups when we get home. Ubuntu recently released 18.04 and I am currently updating my various computers. But, apparently, Subsurface doesn't support...

Dive knives: Tester's choice or go cheapie?

Who told you that you couldn't carry a knife? We've got at least 200 dives off Cozumel, and none of us have ever been asked to leave our knives behind. Now, admittedly, none of us carry a BFK (except me, and only when I'm lionfish hunting), but we all carry at least a knife. Personally, I carry...

    Accidents in your diving ...

Let's see... When we first started (I think it was before we actually got certified) I was in a poodle jacket. I didn't adjust it after we splashed, and it road up during the dive. When we surfaced and I inflated it, it constricted around my diaphragm, which made breathing somewhat problematic...

Dive Logbook: Paper, or Computer ? [Poll]

I keep electronic logs. And no, I am not the least bit worried about losing them. First, there's nothing in those logs that would harm me in the least if I lost them. Second, I'm sort of anal about backups. I keep copies of important files on my desktop and on at least one laptop. Plus I have a...

What would you attempt to fix without surfacing?

You really should. Exactly. It's really very simple, as long as your reg is designed to be disassembled without tools.

What would you attempt to fix without surfacing?

Or you could end up with your air turned off.... As soon as we started our descent, I noticed my reg (HOG D1) was breathing a little wet. No big deal. I switched to my octo, turned off my right side valve, and took it apart to clean the spec of sand out of the diaphragm. Didn't really think it...
