Two German divers drown at Gran Cenote Kalimba at Tulum

You know that now, based on a lot of forensic work that went into making the report. It takes a lot of skill and experience to have the awareness where you are in a cave, and how far in terms of gas and time you are from exits, gas sources, etc. It's obviously easier if you know the cave well...

Two German divers drown at Gran Cenote Kalimba at Tulum

Thanks for the update! Looking forward to the report, by the sounds of it you have put in significant effort into its quality to ensure the community can learn from this accident. Thanks again for that.

It’s been explained well already, but this might help to visualize:

    Video/Vintage Cave diving documentary

I just came across this little nugget from much older days, a documentary about early cave diving in Australia. I thought some of you might find it interesting or entertaining, and maybe offsets a little the heated debate next door on the Chatterton video  :happywave:

DIR- Generic Fundies as a first encounter with doubles

Sorry I had missed the part above on 70 dry dives already. In that case you should be good, and really no reason not to go for doubles. I do have the hypothesis though that you will end up with less gas in the suit after fundies than currently ;-) and with steel doubles you will need the wing a...

DIR- Generic Fundies as a first encounter with doubles

One more small piece of advice in case you decide to get dry suit experience before fundies: there are different philosophies how to dive a dry suit. To avoid the problem of acquiring “bad” habits (or habits different from how you will dive within GUE), make sure that whoever teaches you is...

DIR- Generic Fundies as a first encounter with doubles

Switching to doubles was fairly easy for me. The main difference is that they are heavier on land, but once in the water I did adjust very quickly. You will learn not to do fast rolling movements, but other than that I found doubles actually to be easier under water than singles. Imho doubles...

Recommend me a travel BC for advanced diver

I have a Halcyon Carbon Fibre plate with Eclipse wing for travel. Prior to that I had a Zeagle Express Tech which my wife now uses. I like the BP/W style BC also for travel. First because it’s the same setup as what I normally dive at home (albeit with doubles, stages, etc). Second because it...

What cylinders work as slung stages / bailouts?

I’m also in the Ali camp due to buoyancy characteristics. I’ve got an Ali 7 for 100% oxygen and a few Ali 80s for 50% oxygen, Nitrox 32 (long shallow dives), 18/45 (bottom stage). Some of the sizes are a matter of taste, eg many would opt for an Ali40 for oxygen rather than a 7. Also some would...

Dual Bladder Wings - A Good Choice for Redundancy?

Let's keep going a little further and we'll have a Rube Goldberg machine! :D

Dual Bladder Wings - A Good Choice for Redundancy?

Best paired with a “slob knob” to make valve drills more convenient? ;-) @mods: While it’s been an entertaining discussion, it might be worth splitting the double wing extravaganza into a separate thread vs the recent experiences with fundies the OP asked about?

    GUE Fundamental course

Bringing this a bit more back OT ... you’ll find lots of reports in the “Technical” forum and in its “DIR” sub-forum. To be able to access the latter, you need to go to your profile and check the box “DIR practitioner” (or something like that). Some links for you: Signed up for Fundamentals...

    GUE Fundamental course

Not sure this is the textbook definition, but I recall two things: Be able to swim it up from depth without ditching weights with full tanks (= beginning of the dive) in the case of a failed wing (=BC) Be able to comfortably hold a stop with near empty tanks (= end of the dive) at 3m/10ft

How to choose a Cave Instructor - My opinion

I fully agree with you. However, there is a slight twist: if the criterion is that the instructor should have heaps of experience in teaching this particular class, or they must be certified to teach beyond cavern, then there isnt really a way to make new instructors. So while absolutely...

    Light shootout

First of all awesome idea, thanks for taking the time! Since you’re also doing Halcyon scouts it would be great to see them side by side with a Heser, Heser 2nd edition (new model since August this year), Light Monkey etc. I would love to send you the different Heser models for the test, but...

Plura Cave Wedding live on Youtube

FSR 1st Stage Positioning and routing

I use it upside down without the 5th port on single tank (with DIR hose configuration), precisely for the reason you mentioned: more space for the head. Works well enough for me without the extra port. On doubles the 5th port would make a lot of sense, but I have dedicated 2x DST for doubles.

    Average Gas Consumption

I voted based on single tank rec diving given that it’s the Basic forum, but would like to point out that it depends heavily on the activity ... Rec diving in tropical waters with single tank 10-12 l/min so 0.35-0.42 cu ft/min Tech diving working phase (ie swimming with doubles/stages, laying...
