Recommended weight system for travel BP/W

There are a lot of options, all using the usual 1-2kg weights that normally go on weight belts and are universally available 1. Put trim weight pockets on tank cam bands 2. Slide weights onto BPW belt strap, ie thread harness webbing through weight 3. Fasten weights to backplate holes with zip...

Wing, Plate and exposure suit choices for new guy

Another question: have you dived your 7mm in Germany/Austria already? I live in Munich and theres no way Id use a wetsuit in the lakes around here, especially outside summer. Drysuit all the way ... but different people perceive temperature differently so you may very well be ok. All Im saying...

Wing, Plate and exposure suit choices for new guy

I dont know the scubapro wing, but most 40lbs wings are too large for a single tank. Dont get me wrong, you can dive with it and probably be safe, but a too large wing has three problems: - excessive drag in the water, meaning its less efficient - can be harder to vent gas, harder to manage air...

DIR- GUE Seeking Fundies I buddy for possible May/June 2019 course

Yep, trim is a good example of what even experienced divers can struggle with. In my fundies class, we had four students: - An experienced divemaster/assistant instructor who used to guide liveaboards with ~600 dives - An experienced advanced open water diver with ~150-200 dives - Myself with...

Best guess, will I be too heavy with this tank?

Its a very common site in Mexico or other warmer water places like eg Egypt

    Reel questions, OMS smart reel

Interesting... why did you go for #36? Most people I know that are replacing line, go from #24 to #18, to have the same length (or more), but have the reel less packed. Leaving a bit of space to the edge makes it easier to reel it back in without having to be ultra careful to balance sides and...

    Reel questions, OMS smart reel

Maybe helpful to add what works (rather than only point out whats wrong with the OMS). Id wager that in cave land the most recommended type is the simple goodman handle reel, like the Halcyon Pathfinder or Lightmonkey Reel. The lightmonkey is a bit lighter (delrin handle vs Aluminum handle), but...

    Reel questions, OMS smart reel

In Mexico you sometimes need this kind of length (120mt/400ft), especially if you dont exactly know where to find the mainline ;-) or if you stick to C1 limits but still want to see another tunnel (aka run reel to first jump kind of deal). I agree with the above, for cave this reel is...

Best guess, will I be too heavy with this tank?

Exactly that, which brings two challenges: 1. You make your life harder than necessary, because the more air in your wing the more difficult it is to manage buoyancy 2. You may not have enough lift to support yourself and a buddy, in case buddy loses buoyancy

Best guess, will I be too heavy with this tank?

Well they eschew steels when paired with wetsuits (this boils down to the balanced rig point above). With a drysuit you want steels for backgas, Alu for stages

Best guess, will I be too heavy with this tank?

I think thats very hard to say, with the limited info you have given. Having some more info about a known configuration that has you properly weighted (tank, plate, weights, suit, fins, regs, ...) would allow some degree of extrapolation, but even then it would be hard. But some food for...

Which hand do use to hold the spool/reel when inflating the DSMB

Also remember that you dont need to fill the bag completely, the gas will expand as the SMB ascends.

Which hand do use to hold the spool/reel when inflating the DSMB

One more thought: all the replies above assume you are using a closed, oral inflate SMB (which is what I would recommend). In case you use an open bottom SMB that is filled by purging the octopus into it, then of course you will become more positively buoyant during the process. I am no expert...

Which hand do use to hold the spool/reel when inflating the DSMB

I do it this way too, except that outside tech classes I already have the spool/SMB pre-assembled. If you only need one breath, then basically there is no change in buoyancy. In the worst case you’ll be a tiny bit negative if you do a full exhale and are slow to get back on the reg. This ...
