    Great Whites in Hawaii

The original clip is from Molokini - one of the main dive sites off of Maui ! Almost all the 2-tank dives on the south shore (unless the boat is moored at Lahaina) will do one dive there and another one closer to shore. I have done Molokini crater twice myself and never seen anything more...

    Great Whites in Hawaii

Everyone knows Hawaii has tiger sharks but it is less well-know that they also have the occassional whitey. And of course, the tourist agencies aren't eager to publicize it. :blinking: Check out this clip at Molokini crater, just off of Maui. What a beautiful animal ! Great White Shark -...

Diving in Ixtapa / Zihuatanejo in May

I am doing some research for a possible trip in May of 2014. I found a bunch of the old posts. The most recent one I saw was 2010. What I have been able to gather: 1) water on the Pacific side of Mexico is colder, warms up a little in the summer months 2) not a lot of coral, more rocky...

    Humboldt Squid Dive - Loreto

Dr. Bill - I read the ones off of Catalina were pretty small. There was also a humorous comparison to the difference between hanging out with a house cat versus a mountain lion. Size makes a big difference ;) ---------- Post added November 22nd, 2013 at 07:12 PM ---------- For those who are...

What is the life of a "dive bum" like ?

Thanks for all the posts. I am sure the reality is a lot less glamorous than it looks. It does seem a difficult lifestyle to maintain, especially when wives and children enter the picture with attendant pressure for more financial security. Like Scoobydrew, every once in a while I feel like...

What is the life of a "dive bum" like ?

First off, I want to clarify that I don't mean the word bum in a negative way. I mean this very much as the equivalent of a ski bum - a person who has given up more material pursuits to enjoy a sport he loves for a period of time. ( I was a ski bum at one point in my younger years.) But perhaps...

Has anybody here done the Humboldt squid night dive out of Loreto, Mexico? It looks pretty awesome. I am thinking of putting it on my bucket list.

Newbie Diver; What tropical location to dive?

My girlfriend and I went to Ambergris Caye in Belize. Loved it. Lots of good diving. You get to see all kinds of bigger animals, especially nurse sharks, rays, and turtles. It's not as developed as Cozumel or Cancun so you can probably find some good deals. You'll have to research the...

What happened to the Hammerheads of LaPaz ?

Thanks for the link. As it mentions, our oceans are facing several complex issues including global warming, acidification, and overfishing. I am a member of Oceana and send them money from time to time. I encourage others too as well.

What happened to the Hammerheads of LaPaz ?

I came across this sad article about the destructive fishing pracices in the area while planning a trip. If this isn't a perfect example where educating the locals about the value of ecotourism would be helpful, i don't know what is. What Happened to the Hammerheads of La Paz ? by Johnny...

    Los Cabos recommendations

Cabo San Lucas is the city right on the tip. Jose Del Cabo is along the coast. Cabo San Lucas is a real city not just a resort so it is a bit grittier. It is also where most of the restaurants, bars and nightlife are. Most of the nicer resorts are outside of the city. There are several dive...

Pacific Mantas and Hammerheads in La Paz

I dove Gordo Banks in November of 2012 on nitrox. We were lucky and were able to see a big school of hammerheads down deep on our first dive. Couldn't find them again on the second dive, although I am sure they were still there.
