Home Owners Association - Going Ballistic

I am constantly annoyed by my own HOA, but I usually just ignore them. However, if they want to behave like sea lawyers you can always best them at their own game. For example you could try something this. Go into your garage and empty your tanks. Then write a letter saying that the tanks...

YaGWST: Yet another Guadalupe White Shark Trip

Yep. That is why I tried to get the cage in the frame. Those girls are BIG.

    Sharks and Cameras?

I highly doubt that sharks can sense the electromagnetic field from strobes. While it is true that sharks can sense nanovolt electric fields, they can ONLY sense DC fields. So if you put a battery in the water, you can be pretty certain that they can sense it. However, the strobe electronics...

YaGWST: Yet another Guadalupe White Shark Trip

Hi All, I just got back from a Guadalupe White shark trip aboard the Nautilus Explorer. This is my second time out to Guadalupe, and this time we went late in the season when the big females show up. It is hard to estimate size underwater, but these girls were a good 17-18ft long! They made...

Why the fear of Great White sharks?

1/2" metal bar? I don't know what sort of budget cages you were in, but I just got back from a Guadalupe trip on the Nautilus Explorer. Their cages were constructed from 2" welded steel pipe. There is no way in hell that a shark is getting through that. Of course I was leaning way out of the...

How often does a drysuit leak?

I have about 200 dives on my DUI Flex50/50 drysuit. I have had 4 wet/damp dives. 1. I stupidly forgot to zip the suit the last 1/2". I felt the trickle and thought I would just tough it out during the dive. I was freezing after about 30 minutes and I had feet full of water. This was my...

Neat Little Tricks Are Good to Know

Another one of my favorite diving tricks is for finding a lost buddy during a night dive. Hold your light against your chest so that it gets dark. Then spin around slowly and look for the glow from your buddy's light. This works even in relatively low visibility.

    What to do in soup?

I was diving on Thursday night and had "soup" conditions. We had one group of three (me and two buddies) and one husband and wife team. We swam out from a local beach and dropped down into 15-18ft of water. The vis was only 1-2ft. The husband and wife team bailed immediately, which was good...

Will she or won't she? (See a GSB?)

For whatever reason I am similarly cursed. I have done hundreds of dives in the Channel Islands and have only seen a GSB once, and that was a very brief encounter. Of course I have been on many boats where others have seen them. Grrr. I will keep trying.

    Dry Suits

That actually brings up one if the problems with drysuit diving in southern California. The last time I was in San Diego I dove the Yukon. The water was around 50f on the bottom so I was glad I had my drysuit. But I nearly roasted to death on the boat. The air temp was around 80f and the sun was...

    Astronauts and The Bends

From what I read, they go from 1 ata of AIR in the station, to 0.3 ata of O2 in the suit. The reason for the low pressure is to reduce stress on the the pressure suit and allow it to be relatively flexible. Since they will drop pressure once they leave the stations they pre-breath 1ata O2...

    Came up too fast

Perhaps the BC inflator valve was leaking or got stuck open. It is not too uncommon with rental gear, which is one reason I ALWAYS bring my own gear. With rental stuff you have no idea how well it has been maintained. Even so, with a stuck inflator you should have been able to vent air faster...

Neat Little Tricks Are Good to Know

Here is one of my favorite shore diving tricks. When swimming out or in let the surge do the work for you. Kick when the surge is pushing you in the direction you want to go and go still when it pushes you back. If you are over sand or rock you can modify this so that you don't need to any...

    New student "gear packages"

That is exactly my point. You can't just look at "your circle". In the world of statistics this is called selection bias. If you only look your crowd of active divers, then of course you see a group of active divers, but that is not the norm. Ask a couple dive shops in your area what pays...

    New student "gear packages"

Getting hard numbers on this is notoriously difficult since the dive agencies either don't know, aren't sharing, or are inflating their numbers. The best info I have seen on the subject is an Undercurrents article How Many Divers Are There? : Undercurrent 05/2007. Their estimates also jive...

    Socorro islands

This is not true. As far as I can tell, there are now 5 ships going out to the Revillagigedoes Solmar V 34.1 meters (112 ft) Nautilus Explorer 35.4 meters (116 ft) Sea Escape (Club Cantamar) 33.5 meters (110ft) Rocia del Mar - 30.44 meters (99.9 ft) Baja Agressor 39.6 meters (130ft) So it...

    New student "gear packages"

Are you serious? Look at the numbers. The vast majority of people who start diving are not active within a couple years. These people are clearly not "spending twice." Of the active divers, most of them continue diving with their original gear. Only a tiny fraction replace their gear with...

    Dry Suits

My magic number is 58F. If the water is above 58F I dive wet with a 7mm and hooded vest. If below 58F I dive dry. The only exception is when I do shore dives, which I always do wet. I find that my drysuit is too much of a hassle in the surf, and I don't like getting sand in it. Besides I am...

    New student "gear packages"

One last comment is regarding learning to dive with a Drysuit. Personally I love my drysuit, but I think it is worthwhile learning to dive wet, even in cold water. Here are a few reasons. * Drysuits are substantially more expensive than wetsuits, both initially, and in terms of maintenance...

    New student "gear packages"

That's funny, I was thinking that my "student" dive package held up pretty well. I bought it in 1983. I used the snorkel for a few years until I decided I hated it getting caught in the kelp. Then I relegated it to snorkeling (which in my opinion is where it belongs). The hood I used for...
