new to santa barbara!! in need of dive buddies, friends, advice ;)

You should check out the Paradise Dive Club. It is a good way to connect with SB divers and learn about local dive sites. The meetings are the last Tuesday of each month at 7:00pm in the Sizzler restaurant in Goleta. Www.paradisediveclub.org.

    When Sea Lions attack!

I had the hood custom made for me by "Deep Thought Wetsuits" (Custom Wet Suits by Deep Thought Diving Products). It is 12mm neoprene on the head and 5 mm on the face and belll. It is a pain to get on and off but it really keeps me warm.

    When Sea Lions attack!

Yes, we kept our cool, even as the Sea Lions became aggressive. Although they were intimidating, I didn't feel any urge to do something stupid like punch them or rush to the surface. Antagonizing large animals is a really bad idea. Their play was bad enough, I don't want to be around them...

    When Sea Lions attack!

I recently returned from a 10 day dive trip through SE Alaska aboard the Nautilus Swell. We had a great time and the diving was wonderful. In this thread I want to recount an encounter with an unruly mob of Steller Sea Lions. Alaska is home to a large population of Stellers. Like California...

    Dryglove liners and "damp gloves"

I got back from my Alaska trip a couple weeks ago and I thought I would report back how my experiment with the latex glove underliners fared. Overall it was a success. I put on latex gloves under my Thinsulite liners. It kept the inside of Zip Gloves nice and dry. However I also did...

    Gpo!

Great shot! I am heading to Alaska in a couple weeks and hope to get some good images of a GPO.

Up close and personal with a big Galapagos shark

Here are a couple more from my recent trip to the Revillagigedos aboard the Nautilus Explorer. This was taken at Roca Partida, near the thermocline where the big sharks hang out. The first photo is up close and personal with a 10ft Galapagos shark. The second image needs a little explanation...

    Whale Shark in Blue Water

You are welcome. It was a highlight of my diving experience.

    Dryglove liners and "damp gloves"

Thanks Bill. I actually did buy an extra pair of zip gloves as a backup. In fact they are pretty easy to install (just not when you have the suit on) so I may take them off between dives. On this trip we are diving the inside passage which is all tidal diving so there are six hours between...

    Dryglove liners and "damp gloves"

I will give it a try and let you know how it works. It might be a bust but then again it might just work.

    Dryglove liners and "damp gloves"

Yes, as I mentioned in the initial posting.

    Dryglove liners and "damp gloves"

The moisture is from perspiration. I pressure checked the suit with the gloves on and it is not leaking at all. The issue is a progressive accumulation over a series of dives. The idea is contain the moisture to the exam glove or the liner. The exam glove is disposable and the liner is easy...

    Dryglove liners and "damp gloves"

Hi All, I have been diving DUI Crushed Neoprene ZipGloves for 5 years and they are great. Since they attach to the suit, they do make donning a little awkward but I have worked it out so that it is no big deal. The issue I have is that after several dives (especially on a multiday trip) the...

    Which Lense Should I Buy

I have a 5dMk-I and the Canon 100mm macro and the Canon 17-40 WA Zoom are my go-to lenses. I also love my Sigma 15mm FishEye, but unless you have big subjects that like to get close, it is hard to use. I think that the Tokina 10-17 is inappropriate for a full frame sensor camera like the...

    Whale Shark in Blue Water

Hi All, Last month I visited the Revillagigedos (Soccoro) Islands aboard the Nautilus Explorer. On a great dive at Roca Partida, after a great encounter with a 10ft Galapagos Shark, I started ascending towards my safety stop. Way above me, near the surface I noticed a shape that looked...

How do you lure an octopus out of a crevice?

What I do when I spot an octopus in a hole is take my glove off and put my bare hand near the hole. I think they like the warmth of the exposed flesh, because more often than not, the octopus will venture out of his hole and wrap some tentacles around my hand to investigate. That way if we...

    Socorro islands

It seems that someone is spreading disinformation. I took the Nautilus to Socorro in 2007 and they had already already been doing the trip for 5 years. I was so impressed with the Nautilus that I subsequently dove Guadalupe and Alaska with them. It is a very well run and comfortable ship...

    Rebreathers and fast current

That is a good point. The same volume of air distributed as a few large bubbles makes much more noise than lots of small ones. I like the idea of having a screen for open circuit that breaks up the big bubbles.

    Rebreathers and fast current

Why do you think that bubbles generated by dolphins and whales are silent? The bubbles themselves are the source of the noise, regardless of who generates them. You can verify this yourself with a simple test. Descend about about 5 feet in a swimming pool and breathe slowly. Wait for the...

Why the fear of Great White sharks?

I agree with much of what you said, but GWS are not the biggest, by far. Basking sharks and whale sharks are MUCH bigger, but then again, the don't prey on marine mammals.
