I dive a steel backplate & wing and love it. I would love to take it on trips involving flights. Besides the obvious weight of the steel backplate, any other downsides? How do you guys pack if you bring your PB/W on flights? Take it apart? Leave is assembled if it fits in your suitcase?

I remove the plate from the wing for traveling when I put it in the suitcase.

It goes in my checked bag(Patagonia Black Hole duffel, not a suitcase) The wing comes off and is packed as far as possible from any metal edges.

I leave it assembled and put it at the bottom of my checked bag. It’s quite flat when appropriately squished.

I own both a steel and an aluminum backplate. I take the aluminum plate on flights to save weight. I have weight pockets on the cam bands to make up for the lost weight of the steel backplate.

My new BP/W fits perfectly in my check-in hardshell suitcase so that’s where I plan to stow it fully assembled, along with the fins.Yet to travel and dive with it though.

Take it apart and in carry on with regs, mask and computer.

My own way;
Take everything[cam bands, plate(Al or SS) and wing] apart, check(visual and blow up the wing) and finally pack in the checked bag.
