Has anyone adapted a Draeger Ray to a backplate? Or at least found a way to get rid of the positive bouyancy?

yes to the backplate. not sure what you mean about the positive buyancy.
There is a dead section in the center of the bc air bag. You can burn match holes through the shell and bc air bag, then bolt it down. The counter lungs fold out of the way.

I know ron at TMISHOP has one for the Dolphin - I bet he could knock something up for you, check out his web site http://www.tmishop.com

If you follow this link to the drager website, here are some pics of how I fitted a back plate.

Basically a couple of stainless strips, one either side, holes through, with brass eyelets, and you are away.

With the cross at the bottom, you can have the cross piece on the other side, and put a hole and eyelet into the cam band for the tank and it holds it more secure.

With the backplate, the unit is much more secure, when you pull the straps tight, you do not restrict the counterlungs at all.

I took it one step further and made up some PVC tubing so I can mount two bottles vertical to give me redundancy and drysuit inflation, but you can just go with the strips and dive it as is. BTW, I used shallow mushroom headed bolts.

It is now better finished, with the tube cut to a nice size, and matching (ish ) bottles and better clamps. I dived it on saturday and it was great.

My next step is to trim off the standard ray straps, take out some of the foam, and see how it goes.

Hope this helps
