I read that the Soviets were not happy about that operation.
 
She was found in 1959 and the Soviets were not happy that somebody was using sonar in their backyard. Relations between the UK and USSR were very strained and Britain designated the wrecksite as a war grave to at least give it paper protection against unscrupulous Soviet salvagers. By 1970 their anxiety let them grant the contract for salvage to Jessop Marine, who then let it lapse for over a decade.

I'm not sure that the Soviet Union got anything out of it. I also think that due to the immense depth of 860ft, the Soviets balked at it, or lacked the equipment and know-how to carry on such an operation.
