Two divers are missing after they were reported to be trapped on a wreck off the coast of Cornwall.

The two divers were exploring HMS Scylla, a popular diving destination near Whitsand Bay, when their dive boat reported to HM Coastguard that they had become trapped.

A third diver managed to get to the surface and is being treated for decompression at DDRC in Plymouth.

The coastguard launched a coordinated search with a helicopter from Newquay as well as both Plymouth RNLI lifeboats and Looe's RNLI lifeboat.

Devon and Cornwall Police are also involved.

The coastguard said the search continued until the early hours of the morning but the divers were not found.

Professional dive units are being brought to assist.

James Instance for HM Coastguard said: "Our thoughts at this difficult time are very much with the family and friends of the two missing divers."

Thanks for the update

I fear that the next people who penetrate the wreck might find the bodies.

However that will be better than missing bodies in the ocean and at least give the surviving families some closure.

I was diving from Plymouth last week - there were police divers were moored above the wreck on a few occasions. Have heard conflicting stories that they've found them, but haven't managed to get them out yet (vs not found them yet).

In any case dive boats are staying away from the Scylla currently (potentially until the divers are recovered).

If they have not been found yet, it is likely they won't be in any of the easily accessible areas of the wreck.

Second body recovered...

The bodies of two divers, who failed to return to the surface while taking part in a planned dive off the Cornish coast, have been recovered.

They were part of an expedition exploring the wreck of HMS Scylla on September 3 but had failed to surface.

A major search operation was launched in to find the missing pair involving the police and coastguards crews.

Bodies of the two men have now been found and recovered, and files are being prepared for the coroner.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesman confirmed on Friday morning: “The bodies of two divers, who failed to return to the surface while taking part in a planned dive at HMS Scylla on September 3, have been recovered.

“One of the men, aged 40, from Plymouth, was found and recovered on September 15.

“The second man, aged 49, from Saltash, was found and recovered on October 12.”
