Today was urchin training! Beautiful weather despite a sweltering Bay Area heat wave. A bit of swell, maybe 1 meter, but otherwise perfect conditions. 5+ meters of visibility at Tanker's Reef off Del Monte Beach, water at 15ºC / 57F. Got as deep as 11 meters for dives of 59 and 65 minutes. Saw the tiniest neon orange nudibranchs on the rope, an extraordinarily well-camouflaged octopus, tons of large whelks, and a trio of 30cm maroon sea hares. They are huge!
And, of course, we saw the end of 500 urchins. The sanddabs got into a feeding frenzy and we were joined by a cormorant that hunted around us without fear. I did collect a dozen of the larger urchins, and didn't find anything palatable inside them. Oh, well. There are hundreds of thousands of urchins in the study area alone, so it's barely making a dent, but it's better than nothing.

Saturday went to Lovers Point.
I ended up skipping the dives cuz issues. Still, stuck around because there are worse places to chill out. Helped the others deal with the scramble up the rocks post dives. Enjoyed watching the memorial paddle out for local Lovers Point surfer Billy Brewer. Popular young man; participants came from SoCal, Hawaii, and even further away to honor their buddy. He died last month at 65.(cancer)

First dive #3. Second dive #1 to #3. vis 20-30. (so I was told).

was on beach hopper 2 yesterday in monterey. simply amazing conditions with 75+ feet visibility below 15ft depth . lots of life and i see the jellyfish are back!

That’s awesome!
I unfortunately don’t get to go very often as my wife is not a big fan of cold water shore diving, even with my scuba-sherpa’ing her gear back and forth from shore
We did Beachhopper II and Lobos in the last couple of months, so she definitely is coming around though!
