LOL...it's not the reel that drops. It's all the other stuff...lights, clips, gopro's, etc.. When I see a "mess" about to deploy, I circle underneath and pull it my "catcher's mitt." I've earned a few beers that way...
 
I have revised the video with less reading and better video. The video is from an open water site instead of a pool. It also includes the fact that you should use a bolt snap or double ender as the pivot point instead of your hand.

 
Thanks divezonescuba. Very informative video. Funny, I dropped my new 30m spool last night on the floor at home whilst I was setting it up. Never knew they could unravel so fast.. Didn't need this technique to pick it up but I can see how in water I would have needed too.
