The port was rumored to be closed this week, but I don't think that's been the case. Just not enough divers to get many boats out.

Found on Cozumel 4 You
DIVER DEATH: This post is on behalf of Dive with Martin. There is a rumor circulating that a diver passed away on one of our dive boats Thursday evening. There was a diver who died from DCS and for that we offer heartfelt condolences to his family. He was a 59 year old man from the Riviera Maya.

These are the facts of the incident: The Dive with Martin boat, Teresa del Mar, was rented by the Marine Park (from 6 - 10 pm) for use in patrolling the area around Palancar Reef. The captain and mate were supplied by Dive with Martin.

While moving north from Palancar toward town, those on the boat heard cries for help coming from a group of divers in the water. The captain navigated to the group, which had been shore diving. They picked up the divers and one of them was thought to have Decompression Sickness. They quickly went back to Marina Fonatur and met the ambulance. The sick diver later died at the hospital.

Again, we offer our condolences to the man and his family.

I just saw this on the Cozumel 4 You FB page:

Just to point out, the author of this post is Patti Davies, who works at Dive With Martin.

Very sad news, especially right now. May he rest in peace & my condolences to his family.

I’d like to know what the other divers in the group had to say about the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate accident.

This was in Alerta Cozumel today: here's the link SE AHOGA UN BUZO; LO TRASLADADA AL HOSPITAL, PERO YA ERA DEMASIADO TARDE

COZUMEL Q.ROO.- A person who was diving in the southern part of the island, felt bad and managed to surface, being helped by your companions and managed to take him to the hospital, but unfortunately minutes later he died.

At 9:00 p.m. yesterday, ministerial agents learned that in the Hyperbaric clinic a fishing diver had died from drowning, and is unknown.

Clinic staff told authorities that around 8:05 p.m., paramedics were informed by telephone, by the captain of a boat - they did not provide more information - to go to the southern part of the island, for an emergency medical, and it was near Chankanaab, right on the seashore, where a male person who was given CPR resuscitation was assessed, and his life was assured, which is why he was transferred to the International hospital.

Meanwhile, hospital doctors reported that on March 26, 2020, a male patient was admitted to the emergency room at 8:28 p.m., who was admitted by paramedics, in cardiopulmonary resuscitation with intubation management. , and said patient died at 8:50 p.m., due to a cardiac arrest, which is found to be unknown, since when he entered, he had no identification.

The deceased is of fair complexion, light complexion, approximately 1.80 meters, with long hair, wearing a white plaid shorts with blue.

Finally, the body was transferred to the cold room of the Forensic Medical Service (SEMEFO), in order to perform the autopsy on the law, and determine the true causes of death, the police reported.

That the Marine Park wanted to patrol 5-9pm when the ports were closed suggests to me they were looking for this very thing - locals attempting to dive in the park, perhaps for food.
