You don't need to. You can feed offboard oxygen to all rebreathers (...used for this type of diving) and bailout bottles are always equipped with an extra inflator hose for this reason.

This kind of thing probably would never make the news in many places, but in this case in addition to the the dive site "help if you need it" folks, the emergency services were alerted just so that if things went drastically south, they would be available. Contacting emergency services made the ongoing situation public knowlege and *boom* it's a story.
