Did you miss the statement of "length I feel useful"? The DSS is approx. 36" (perhaps a meter), and maybe less.....

Aside from being a DSMB, those are of zero comparison...

you didn't say you wanted a short smb for calm lake waters. lots of options for 1M slim smbs. subgravity, dive alert, halcyon, xdeep, etc.

That is what the DSS one is (was)....
 
I have a couple of the Halcyon SMBS which have served me well.
 
I like the Halcyon LP hose connectors, I use their pink six foot slim marker for drift deco dives, a few captains have commented on how easy it is to spot. Nice size when rolled up too, doesn't take up much pocket space.
