Thanks all other posters, some excellent thoughts here. I don't dive with gloves / in cold climates / caves / wrecks etc. (yet) so that's most probably the root of my confusion - it's as easy for me (sans gloves) either way. But I totally get it now thinking about gloves.

accidental opening?

I don't know where you dive, but accidental opening is not something that I believe in. And I have been grinding myself against rock quite a bit while "diving".

It is easier to unclip just the right thing if its the only thing pointing out of course (or it is simply easier to unclip if the gate points out; try with thick drygloves and you will know). It might also be easier to clip from below (the D-ring lifts) than from above (is pressed agains the shoulder strap). Note where the gate points.
