The purpose of the -2 exposure compensation is an attempt to get the shutter speed up and darken the background. It is -2 on the ambient exposure meaning the shutter speed is two stops faster than it otherwise would be. This is because the TG-6 has no manual mode. If you are shooting macro the S-2000 are plenty powerful enough you will zoomed quite likely and shooting at f6.3, you may struggle a little at f18 but would only use that to get a dark background if the ambient light is quite bright. You would use less for wide angle shooting as you want the background correctly exposed then. The S-2000 are also more than powerful enough for wide angle work with this camera as at the wide end you will probably be at f2.8 so the requirements for flash power are not that great due to the wide aperture.

That's the most helpful explanation of the Backscatter default TG-5 settings I've read - thank you! It's tough to figure out what the best knobs to use on this camera since many tutorials talk about shutter speed and we don't have direct access to that.
