We're actually seeing an increase in numbers of GWS & Tigers thanks to giving them protected status 20 + years ago....but it doesn't change the fact that worldwide sharks are in serious trouble.

Shark finning and distribution has become like organized crime in many ways.
Just like abalone poaching or any other animal that fetches a staggering price, they will always be a target.
One way minimize this is to lessen demand.
The problems of supply and demand.
When supply goes way down and demand goes up the price soars. When price soars this can sometimes have the reverse effect of increasing demand even more from the wealthiest people who feel even more special and elite because they can afford something the very few others can.

How would these people like it if they had their hands and feet chopped off and were thrown into the ocean alive to die.
Some people are just so ignorant and callous.

The problem is the Chinese still believe they have magical powers along with some other Asian cultures and countries. Just like they also believe rhino and elephant ivory has powers as well. Until your stop the idiotic beliefs nothing will change.

It’s not magical powers. It’s a marker of high status.

Also I start seeing less and less manta as the Chinese use the manta gills as medicine.

It absolutely is about magical powers.

“The popularity only increased as shark finsoup became part of Chinese traditional medicine. Shark fins are believed to prevent cancer, heart disease, and lower cholesterol. ... Shark fin soup is also used to help improve appetite and boost sexual potency.”

Exactly. More nonsensical beliefs of magic powers

If the USA really put their foot down, got most countries to join in to ban shark fishing. Just like whaling and endangered species already, that would help.

Not sure why there's no such political will on the west.
