Sherwood AVID BCD Two (2) Simultaneous Catastrophic Plastic Tank Mount Failures.

On a dive in Georgian Bay, Ontario, Canada last weekend my Sherwood AVID XXL BCD had two (2) simultaneous AVID BCD Catastrophic Plastic Tank Mount Failures.

This left my 130 steel tank dangling from the safety strap.

Fortunately, I balanced the tank on my back to complete the ascent.

This is a major problem and safety issue with the Sherwood design in their BCD's.

Sherwood should recall all their BCD's with this tank holder design.

When the plastic breaks the tank is released from the BCD.

Unlike any other manufacturer the straps do not run inside the jacket.

This poses a major safety issue to the diver as he/she is no longer in control of the tank.

Has there been a Sherwood recall or fix with respect to this issue?

Feedback welcome,

Bruce Boyes, P.Eng.

Am I correct that these BCDs are at least 5 or 6 years old, and not current production that was upgraded to avoid this issue?
I sent a link for your post to my Sherwood inside guy here in the US at his request, so hopefully you will be hearing from him, or perhaps someone in Canada if he has to delegate it across the border.

Yes, BCD is at least 5 or 6 years old.
If you PM me your email address, I will pass that along to Sherwood.

Please post if Sherwood does something about this issue. I have an Avid that is a backup bcd and loner for friends and students. Its definately an issue.
