They can, and do, happen at all times of the year.
In my experience the currents seem to be crazier in the spring & the fall.

But do you think they have become more wild recently ( in the last 5 - 10 years )?
 
I always wonder how Jim gets the fish to hold still so he can take their picture. :confused: Half of the photos of my recent trip to Cozumel were either blurry, or only half a fish because it wouldn't hold still... :cry:

I have been diving Cozumel for over 25 years and in my experience the currents vary day to day and site to site more than they vary year to year or over the course of a year, but of course that's anecdotal evidence so it's not really evidence at all.
