Couple things:.

1. December is way out of hurricane season. Hurricanes are generally a summer/early fall phenomenon.

2. Winds shift such that you can get weather out of the NW in December. I'd look at the South side at that time, though Coconut Tree and apparently AKR can shuttle you over.

3. Collectivo taxis are dirt cheap. If you don't mind sharing a cab with locals, it opens up the island for you. Buses and collectivo minibuses are cheaper but much slower.

4. Except for the spring dry season, it rains year round. It's the cold coming out of the NW that can get you. If it's snowing in Dallas, it'll be cool in Roatan. Prepare for the possibility of a cool snap and you'll be fine.

Well, that doesn't sound good. Looking at average weather data, it seems the water temperature doesn't fluctuate much, but the chance of light rain goes up a lot. Does anyone else have experience with Roatan (south shore) in December?

Do you have any recommendations for dive ops in Grenada? That's assuming you experienced better weather conditions there in December.

You will be hard pressed to find a better dive op than Aquanauts, especially if you get to dive with Paul!

Perhaps you don't want to discuss your budget here on the board. Feel free to send me a pm and I'll help you pick a place to stay.

@chillyinCanada Have you been diving in Grenada in December? Is Grenada's weather (rainy season?) really that different than the Bay Islands? At this point we've decided to save a Roatan trip for a better season. We're considering a more expensive option and doing the Explorer liveaboard for St. Kitts / Saba, but nothing's certain yet.

Probably, a good decision. For reasons discussed above herein, we only visit Bay Islands from late March to early May. BTW, keep in mind that May 1st is celebrated in Honduras and most dive shops will be closed on this day.
