wonder why it doesn’t get same attention as the others.
IMO a little harder to get to and if you fly to St Thomas first it's another flight or a longer ferry ride over. AA flies direct from some US cities.

Plus from St Thomas you can "drive" to St. John or take the fast ferries to Tortola or Virgin Gorda in the BVI's

We considered it once but went to Gorda instead. VG wouldn't be for you, there's very little shopping, few restaurants and a lot of driving. Only 3K people live there. Good shallow diving though. Tortola is sort of similar - the resorts are spread out all over the island and Roadtown is not exactly touristy. And Tortola is a very long narrow island

Both have amazing beaches though. Litle Dix on Gorda will drop you on one with no road access - you have it to yourself for the afternoon. The area is still recovering from a hurricane so give it a few more years. I don't believe St. Croix was as affected.

. KathyV I just read the St Croix thread and watched the video and I can say I am thouroghly interested. Seems pretty awesome, wonder why it doesn’t get same attention as the others.

I don't remember the details of our flights, but we didn't fly to St. Thomas, we traveled from Chicago to St. Croix. We may have had to stop somewhere (Miami?) on the way - I'm not sure - but it was no more difficult than most of our trips to the Caribbean and it was same-day travel, we didn't have to overnight along the way.

We rented a car, and St. Croix is large and we enjoyed driving around and exploring the island. They drive on the left (even though it is a US territory) but the roads are good - much better than Roatan IMO, and the traffic isn't bad - much better than Grand Cayman IMO.

@Grateful head said that they didn't want to rent a car, and I think that if you stay in Fredricksted you won't have to rent a car - but you might want to rent one for a couple of days just to look around and visit Christiansted - the larger city on the island - there's good diving on that side of the island also, although it can be rougher. The airport transfers may be expensive, so a car rental might be the most economical choice.

I do remember that St. Croix was pricey, I think that is true of most of the USVIs, and it was similar to some other Caribbean locations we have visited. Maybe a little cheaper than Nassau or Provo or Grand Cayman but it was more expensive than Roatan, although I think that the airfare was cheaper, and there are some other expenses that I associate with Roatan. Restaurants on Croix were high, although there were options and ranges. Staying in a place with a kitchen, so you can make some simple meals, and then go out for a nice dinner is a good choice.

St. Croix is also a nice destination when divers are traveling with non-divers because there are enough topside activities available for everyone - although Fredricksted is not highly developed, a bit of a quiet, tropical, seaside town. @drrich2 went to St. Croix not long ago so he may have more information.

We took a tour of the Cruzan Rum factory and that was fun, and we drove out to the Divi casino one night - a long drive and not worth it IMO.

We almost got back there a couple of years ago but we didn't make it; but I asked for info from from N2theBlue, here are some suggestions they gave me about places to stay, but I don't know if these choices are still current. I also don't know if the USVIs have been plagued by the sargassum influx that has hit so many areas of the Caribbean and Central America this year; but you can take a look at a few of their recommendations and see if they are appealing and check out the prices.

"...If you are looking for a place to stay, we highly recommend Cottages by the Sea, located about a mile south of us on one of the best beaches on the island. We also offer discounted prices on our multiple day packages for guests at Cottages Or Villa Mill Point (https://villamillpoint.com/). Another lovely option is Sand Castle on the Beach, which is a boutique resort located right next door to Cottages and has an on-site pool and restaurant. Just a few blocks from our dive shop in town is the The Inn on Strand Street, which provides basic accommodation right on the scenic waterfront. You might also check Airbnb or VRBO for houses and condos for rent near Frederiksted. Many of our divers have enjoyed staying at "The Pink Condos", located about a mile north of our shop and walking distance to the ever-popular Rainbow Beach. St. Croix is the largest of the US Virgin Islands with lots to see and taxis can be pricey, so we highly recommend renting a car. Our guests have had good luck with Centerline car rentals, as it seems to be cheaper from the non-airport location and they offer a pickup service from most hotels..."

So don't discount going to Roatan again. My wife and I go every year and, yes, mostly we dive the same sites off the West End because that is where our dive shop is located, you could look into excursions out to Cayos Cochinos. I did a couple of sea mount dives out there that were spectacular. I think you can probably find excursions to other places as well? Maybe even Utila?

Also, there are some resorts that are actually in Turneffe Atols around Belize allowing you to get to the Blue Hole and other sites super easy but you are kind of stuck there. Maybe go to Caye Calker or Ambergris for part of your stay to get the nightlife and some diving and then part out at the Atols? Kind of like you are getting a 3 day better diving vacation while you are on a longer okay diving vacation? For example, you could do a 3 nigh package out at the atols and the rest of your diving/vacation in or near San Pedro? There are reviews for some of the Turneffe resorts on this board.

We loved St. Croix when we dived there in 2016. We did a VRBO and rented a car. We dived with Cane Bay Dive Shop and really enjoyed the time with them. Our condo was between Christiansted and Fredricksted and we visited both towns for lunch and dinner. If you go to St. Croix, make sure to dive the pier in Fredricksted.....the sealife is AMAZING! We dived it our last day and wish we would've known about it early in the trip. Would we go back to St. Croix....absolutely!
