In another thread, @Zef was talking about his Belgium dive club which seemed very different from my dive club. It got me thinking that I really want to know more about other dive clubs & that this could make for an interesting topic.

So...

1. Where is your dive club & what is it called? Wanna share a link to it?
2. What does it offer (e.g., social events, presentations, buddies, equipment loan, etc.)?
3. What do you enjoy most about it? Anything more it could offer?
4. How much does it cost?
5. How many members are in your dive club?

Here are my answers:

1. Where is your dive club & what is it called? Wanna share a link to it?
NYC Sea Gypsies in New York, NY
Web site
Facebook
Meetup

2. What does it offer (e.g., social events, presentations, buddies, equipment loan, etc.)?
  • A free monthly presentation often from a well known speaker
  • A free monthly event where you can showcase your photography or view other divers' images
  • A monthly dinner at an international restaurant
  • Social events like happy hours once or twice a month
  • A holiday party
  • Club dives including local boat, beach, & lake diving as well as an Intro to North East Diving day & dive trips out of the area
  • A chance to find short-term & long-term buddies (there's always at least 1 diver going out every weekend looking for a buddy)
  • A public Facebook group as well as a member-only Google group
  • A monthly newsletter
3. What do you enjoy most about it? Anything more it could offer?
I love the camaraderie & being able to hang out both above & below the water with other people who share my passion. I'm really happy with what it offers. I suppose I wouldn't hate it if the club sponsored me to go diving all around the world. Aside from that, I don't know that it could offer me more.

4. How much does it cost?
$20 per year

5. How many members are in your dive club?
250+ paid members

We’re based in the sleepy commuter town of Amersham and it’s called: Chesham Sub Aqua Club

2. What does it offer (e.g., social events, presentations, buddies, equipment loan, etc.)?

Training, Dive trips (subsidised), social events, loan kit, pool, talks, snorkelling and freediving activities.

We sold our Rhib as no one was interested in clambering over tubes!

3. What do you enjoy most about it? Anything more it could offer?

As BSAC says, diving with friends but also socialising and training. We do a lot of try dives for local scouts and young people which is good fun.

Clubs are having a hard time at the moment in the UK, membership is falling across the board so inter-club trips are becoming more important hence we work with two local clubs and Facebook to fill boats. So improving networking (treat the club as a hub) and perhaps reducing the yearly cost are something for the future.

4. How much does it cost?

£110 per year for the club
£57 for BSAC.
£50 for a two dive day is pretty typical.

Students and instructors get subsidised membership. We’ll pay for all instructor training fees to encourage new instructors.

5. How many members are in your dive club?

Fluctuates between 25-35 but we all dive!

A similar question was asked on a UK forum sometime ago:

Club fees.

I only belonged for a year in 2005-6. From what I recall you got free fills for Club dives (not other dives on your own).
There was & still is a list of sites and dates the club will dive, but I believe sites can change, and some dates are "divers' choice", so I guess you meet at the shop and group decide.
Cost back then was $35 I think and a little more now per year.

3. What do you enjoy most about it? - Buddies and socialization
4. How much does it cost? Maybe $20
5. How many members are in your dive club? Couple hundred maybe more.
6. Not official trips but lots of members will start a dive and others will join in.
7. There is an annual dinner but I have other commitments at that time.
