Diver who went missing in Plymouth harbour dies after rescue effort
A man who was diving in Bovisand this morning has sadly died, it has been confirmed.
The police, Plymouth Lifeboats and the coastguard took part in the rescue this morning at around 11am.
The diver, a 56-year-old from the local area, was airlifted to Derriford Hospital but despite everyone's best efforts, he passed away.
One woman, who assisted the coastguard on the search this morning, told Plymouth Live: "Unfortunately a diver went missing of the coast of Plymouth today after doing a shore dive, the lifeboats and RNLI were launched.
"[A dive company owner] used his expertise to organise an extensive search with his team of experienced divers using his local knowledge and years of expertise."
With the support of the coastguards the diver was found and then transferred over to RNLI lifeboats.
At the time of the incident, a spokesperson for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: "HM Coastguard has been coordinating a search for a man who went missing in Bovisand Harbour in Plymouth. The call came in just before 11am today (28 October).
"Both Plymouth RNLI lifeboats were sent to assist in the search along with Plymouth and Yelm Coastguard Rescue Teams.
"Devon and Cornwall Police are also involved in the search along with HM Coastguard’s search and rescue helicopter from Newquay.
"The man was found as a result of the search and flown to Derriford Hospital.
"We have no further information at this time."
Tonight, a Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: "A 56-year-old male form the local area is deceased as a result of today's incident [at Bovisand].
"Next of kin are aware."

We were out diving from Plymouth yesterday when the mayday call went out. We assisted the surface search and were waiting for permission from the coastguard to join the underwater search team when they found him. As far as I am aware he got separated from his buddy and then failed to surface. The mayday was put out at 10:45 and the diver was recovered at around 13:30.

My condolences to his family.
