Robert Outlaw, owner of Blue Stone Dive Resort in Thomasville, NC and Blue Dolphin Dive Shop, Winston-Salem, NC, passed away at home on Monday, May 29, 2017. He lost his more than 2 year battle with cancer.

Tribute for Robert Lewis Outlaw | Cumby Family Funeral Service

Bob was a heck of a guy and had been a part of the dive world for a long time. He had built one of the finest full service dive resorts in the eastern US at Blue Stone.

I'm sorry to hear such sad news.... condolences to his family, friends and colleagues......

I last saw him back in Sept of 16 when my girlfriend certified through Blue Dolphin. I was planning on going back this summer and wondering if I would still find him alive, fearing the worst.

The time before that was in Dec of 1999 at my Scubapro Repair Tech Class he helped teach. He has lost so much weight but he refused to give up. I got to talk with him a good while while Regina was in the quarry and I was staying out of their way. Bob was sill helping out by driving that tram. He does not strike me as someone to be kept down. I hate to hear that Bob has passed, dammnit! What a memorable man and a giant in the industry. Rest in peace Bob!

I only had the chance to meet Bob once, but he made quite an impression. That was in 2004. I was tagging along with an OW class to help out and get to know Blue Stone. I had a few conversations with Bob that day. On the drive home I said to the course instructor something like "That Bob sure is an interesting guy." The response was "You don't know how right you are."

Sadly, I never made it back for a follow-up. RIP Mr. Outlaw.
