Flying from the East Coast (NYC) and just started looking at flights for Xmas live aboard. Seems like best way to go is United thru Tokyo or Honolulu. Hawaii is an extra flight but get there faster. Looking for some feedback if you have been and which route you used. Thanks!

Flying from the West Coast, I've gone through Hawaii and that worked out fine. You get a break on the ground there, which is nice, and then its on to Guam. The connection in Guam is tight, but they hold the plane. It's a long flight, but if you doze on the plane it's not too bad because you arrive at night and can go straight to bed. Of course, you are going to be traveling 5 more hours than I did. You might want to stop in Hawaii both directions. I spent one night there on the way back and was glad I did. My recollection was we left Palau at like 1:00 am.

From the east coast we've gone through Honolulu both our Palau trips, and I think we did an overnight there once. We went through Tokyo on our last Philippines trip. It's sort of a wash to me. I think stopping in Hawaii does a slightly better job of breaking up the trip than Tokyo, or at least is of more help adjusting to the time zone. And shorter travel time is good within reason. But one fewer flight is one less place for luggage or something to go wrong, and sometimes it seems better to just get on a long flight and get it mostly over with. (If you can do business class the long flight becomes more appealing, if you're in coach then you really want to get off that plane for a bit.)

For me I think the choice comes down to the stops, assuming the price difference is not insane. I'd rather either stay overnight and rest, or have a reasonable length layover. I don't want to stress out over a 35 minute layover someplace, and I'd prefer not to sit around an airport for 7 hours, which is long but too short to make it worth staying someplace more comfortable or doing anything.

I'm a fan of doing an overnight on the west coast one or both directions. Besides breaking things up, sometimes this will open up some flight options at more civilized times.

Glad you ask the question. Me too like to know. I'm going there this coming December & bought the following United Airlines shortest outbound flights from Houston (IAH) to Koror (ROR), via Los Angeles (LAX) and Honolulu (HNL) and GUAM (GUM) and for the inbound flights through San Francisco (SFO) instead of LAX. Here are my itinerary:
Outbound
1. 12/22/17 UA1169 IAH 07:35A - LAX 09:20A
2. 12/22/17 UA1224 LAX 10:00A - HNL 01:45P
3. 12/22/17 UA0201 HNL 02:45P - GUM 06:35P
4. 12/23/17 UA0185 GUM 08:25P - ROR 11:01P
Inbound
1. 01/01/18 UA0158 ROR 01:45A - GUM 04:50A
2. 01/01/18 UA0200 GUM 07:15A - HNL 06:25A
3. 12/31/17 UA0356 HNL 09:55P - SFO 04:53A
4. 01/01/18 UA2405 SFO 06:00A - IAH 11:55A

My buddy will be coming from Fort Lauderdale, Florida end up buying a ticket the day before to meet me in Houston before flying together to Palau.

One of my big corcern is how the heck they transfer my gears in LAX in 40 minutes (see my outbound flight 1 & 2).

I dunno but you get to celebrate New Years twice on the way back! It's wild how you leave Palau and get to Hawaii the day before.....19 hour time difference......bring good drugs, Ha.
