we are headed to Fiji next week, and one of my traveling companions read that you can't carry sports equipment in your carry-on and called Fiji Airways about taking his regulator in his carry-on bag. The agent looked up their security protocol and although regulators are not mentioned told him that his regulator would be confiscated if he tried to take it on board the aircraft. This sounds really strange, I have take my reg in my carry-on bag on every trip I have made overseas and never had a problem. Does anyone know if there will be a problem if I take my reg in my carry-on bag.

Thanks Bill

Why don't YOU call Fiji Airways and ask. Keep calling until you get the answer you want, of course.
Or, take on faith what some random dude on the internet says....

I think calling the airline in addition to reading anyone's first-hand account of their experience would be optimal. What an airline customer service agent will tell a caller and what travelers have actually experienced is not always the same. Best to gather as much info from as many perspectives as possible.

Thank you Lorenzoid, that is exactly what I want. Responses from people that have recently returned from fiji and what they experienced. The comment regarding "some random dude" could also be applied to the customer service agent. These are not trained security specialists. Also, if I "keep calling until I get the answer I want" who am I to believe, the agents that say you can't or the agents that say you can? I think people that have recent experience trump a customer service agent that may or may not be trained on the country's security protocol. Just my thoughts.

LOL. So, you jump onto a forum and ask, who here has been hit by lightning by standing under a tree during a thunderstorm?
People respond, not me, not me. So their experience trumps the "official word" from the airline?

The airline itself says:
"Restricted Articles and Items
Items such as knives of any size, metallic objects, spare parts, umbrella, curves with sharp edges, that has the potential to be used as a weapon in the cabin are not allowed in your carry on luggage. These items must be placed in your checked luggage."

The argument is that a first-stage reg can be swung from a hose, like a mace, and thus be used as a weapon.
It turns out to be a judgement call by the person inspecting your carry-on. What the internet says is irrelevant. Logic is irrelevant.
You can gamble, like many have, and you can lose the gamble, like some have.
Your choice.
I, and many others, just check our regs.

I am envisioning some kind of martial art involving a reg set. Chuck Norris could do this.

I'm far from a super-experienced dive traveler, but I try to read all the dive travel threads I can, and I can't recall reading any report of security screeners prohibiting regs in a carry-on bag. If that has been someone's experience--anywhere in the world--that would be interesting to know.

i flew fiji airways in 2014 and had my regs in my carryon.

bring food with you, their inflight meal is worse than united. my next trip to fiji i'm going with ANZ or quantas.

It doesn't even matter what Fiji Airways' policy on carry - on luggage is.

Since it's hand luggage, the airline will not get to check its contents - the airport security officers will.
Now, the security officers can not possibly know each airline's individual policy on hand luggage allowance.

So, (as long as it's not a knife or scissors, etc), it'll be down to the actuall security staff checking your bag on the day, to make that call, and not to the airline.

This is really my point. It doesn't really matter what all those folks on the internet say, unless you can get input from the actual people checking your bag. They are the only ones that matter.

Why not go to the "Contact Us" link on the Fiji Airlines website and ask them this question directly? They will reply with an email. You may or may not get the answer that you are hoping for, but at least you will get an answer in writing from the airline (not a third party) that if you need to, can be used to support (if they say yes) you when you check in.
